When the US military switched to the 9mm

Vietnam vets, Korea vets all complaining about the useless .45, how the guns were junk, and failed to do much of anything beyond not work. They were all quite excited to see changes coming, and many wished to have had the 9mm when they were serving in combat.

WWII wartime prodution 1911 45's were mass produced with very loose tollerances and differed greatly in the quality of the rpe-war and commercial 1911 45's of that time. Very few new 1911 45's were produced post war and the armed forces kept the WWII 1911 45's in their inventories through the mid 1980's. These pistols that were crudely manufactured to begin with were worn out and refinished and fitted many times thus putting a bad rap of performance for a mighty fine and effective pistol. The 1911 45's were so worn out and sloopy that it was not unusual for a pistol to go full auto when firing.

The introduction of the 9mm was a political and budget issue rather than a combat effectiveness issue. The hi capacity 9mm pistol was the Defense Department's darling until put into real life and constant combat situation against a highly motivated fanatical enemy. Today, our guys in Iraq are being sent 45's from home at their request and certain units are issued 45's as sidearms due to the ineffectiveness of the 9mm in this combat theatre. Most the combat PA National Guard personnel leave home for Iraq with their personal 45 sidearm either purchased by them or given to them by Legion & VFW organizations, friends or family.

The US military will be switching back to the 45 soon and is doing teats and entertaining bids. Para-Ordnance, Kimber, & Springfield are in the running.

What hangun does delta carry anyhow ?

Delta PD??? Oh you mean the mythical warriors that are barely reconized to this day?? Similar to your JTF-2?

Anyhow, perhaps you didn't read my earlier post. AFAIK, the official issued sidearm would be the M9. Just like any other soldier, airman, sailor or Marine, the official issued weapon is the M16A2/A4 or M9. All others are issued as a mission specific weapon. Things may be a little different as some units are issues as per T&O an entire unit given M4s to replace the M16A2/A4, but if they are carrying Sigs or whatever, that is the mission specific weapon. What does Delta Carry? On paper as 'soldiers' the would be issued as above. What are they carrying? Well, depending on what they are doing, whatever happens to have been approved by their command and is in their armory's stock. In other words, who knows, but they sure as hell have a large assortment to choose from.

Yeah, true, the ones we shot at MCRD were very sloppy, course, I hate to imagine how many rounds these have seen....

Gee, I guess I shouldn't have thrown in the towel so soon.... As for all you nay say'res about the 45ACP..... Well give me a second to check what my "Manly Man" manual says about this..... :D

9mm will always be the official military calibre (at least till they invent laser guns  ) so even if they they find/pick a new .45 pistol it will be for special ops only.

No sure where you are getting your info....I just came from a US Army training conference during which at least 20 projects where briefed, most small arms related. No mention of a new pistol or caliber. Special Forces might be getting something new but I am quite confident there is no plan to replace the M9 and the 9mm cartridge considering the individual training and equipment issues it would generate. Again, makes good internet discussion.......shot placement is the key here.....

as their pistol cartridge, I was scratching my head, thinking what the hell did they do that for???? Well..... I just read a artical that they are now looking at going back to the good old 45acp!! Good for them, I hope they do it, and I think it would be great if Canada went 45 as well. My vote would be for the Glock 21. I have one and love it.

Only SOCOM, using the H&K 45 most probably. The regular forces will carry on using 9mm. Although from the size of the order you could be forgiven for thinking it was the regular forces, that's how large the special operations forces are in the US.

Is the new HK45 being submitted for testing? It sounds that way from the articles I read. Could be just fluff to increase sales.
