When you convert a prohib handgun to restricted by replacing the barrel, what are the legal implications regarding the original barrel?

Can the original barrel then be stored/kept once it is removed from the firearm? or is it considered prohib and must be destroyed?
 
The original barrel is now a prohibited devise. I usually take them to my friendly blacksmiths shop, heat them up in the forge and into the power hammer. They are usually thin enough to use as paper when he is finished with them. If the feds ask for them, I drop them in an envelope and send them off. They only asked once!

Once the pistol has been reclassified as restricted, the original barrel becomes a prohibited device. it cannot be retained by an individual.
There are some businesses that are allowed to retain prohibited barrels as replacements for the barrels on 12(6) firearms.
In all likelihood, you will be told that the barrel must be surrendered or destroyed.
 
If the gunsmith that replaced the barrel to restriced was also a firearms dealer, and the prohib handgun was from his dealer inventory prior to him making it a restricted, would the gunsmith be able to keep the original prohib barrel for future use restoring other prohib guns of that model that might have had barrel damage?
