I searched and i asked on "legalese" but I'll ask here as well

I did search for this information, really I did. But could not find what I am looking for. Could use some help with a quote from legislation of directions to find that legislation.

Where can I legally shoot a handgun?

I know I can get a permit to take a handgun to the approved range I belong to and shoot a handgun there.

However are there other options. Like if I took the gun to a place to be repaired, is it possible to test fire a gun there?

If I got a ATT and took a handgun to a person's farm to show them the gun if they were interested in buying it, could we test fire it there?

You couldn't find the section about shooting a restricted on your property/farm because it doesn't exist. It is illegal.

Can ONLY shoot at an approved range certified for restricted firearms and you need an ATT to get it there and back. Cannot load/shoot anywhere else but an approved range.

In know everyone is making jokes.. but... if someone really does want to shoot on their own land, it really is possible to get it approved.

It is a hassle and a fair amount of work, but pretty cool. I know at least 2 "private" ranges in the Edmonton area (invite only, no memberships).

I was thinking about buying some acreage near a nice fishing lake and calling it Gunsite Ranch North...get an excavator to make a nice backdrop and it would be a great get-away!

It's possible but expensive and annoying. You'll need land use approval from your township and they will probably canvas your neighbours. Assuming you can get the local powers that be to approve the land use, you then have to make the CFO happy and have them approve the range. You will be visited on a annual basis, unless someone complains, in which case they may decide to be dinks......hahahaha, i said may.......

My understanding from a few people I talked to is noise is the biggest problem.

Some Counties have very strict noise laws. Others have zero noise laws. If you get lucky and find a county with zero noise laws then its much easier.

One cool side effect... You can essentially wear your holstered gun anywhere on the property as long as its not "public".

Unless someone has a really huge ranch or farm that covers many square miles, the sound of shots probably will concern the neighbors, especially if one fires off more than a few shots. Everyone, including the game wardens and police officers, can hear shots for miles. Then wait for the phone to start ringing, or worse.

Not long ago I was with someone bump firing their new SKS. Predictably, the neighbors promptly called.

Where did you gain all your experience about private ranges?

Reason I ask is The only private range I have good knowledge of was not expensive to set up. And it was not hard to get approved. And it gets re-certified every 5 years, not inspected every year.

Our range is within city limits. It does not encompass many square miles. Some days I can hear the sound of rifle fire at my house in town.

Why do all the negative-nannies come out in droves spouting nonsense when they really have no idea what they are talking about?

Just for possible future reference...

What does one have to do to get it approved? just make a backstop and get permission from people aroun you?

I understand you have to deal with a few government people but I am just asking for the basics of getting your land ready.

Not sure where you are, but maybe you live in rural Alberta or another hunting friendly area. Here, the petitions would be flying faster than the bullets. No negative nannies - just reality, based on experience.

Does anyone else find it odd that the OP has been a member since the forums' inception, has a trader-rating and over 500 posts, but doesn't know (or cant figure out where to find out) about Laws regarding discharging firearms regardless if they're restricted or not ???

:yingyang:

Instead of asking the question on the internet, why didn't you just call "the horses' mouth" (ie: the CFO) ?

"where all can one shoot a handgun"?

I know from reading threads here, you CANNOT shoot one into space.

In all seriousness it would be great if we could set up personal ranges as in NR firearms, but......

I was in Florida and went hangunning with a guy we met. We shot on his property, it was great! He showed me pics and videos of handgun wild boar hunting.

We talked at length about gun culture, CCW and Canadian firearm laws. He was floored at some of our laws and restrictions.

Oh well, we keep on fighting for our rights we may see change, maybe not to the extent we all want, but any progress is good
