Where are all the model 10s?

Rod just decided to keep his 6" model 10 and buy my Colt Police Positive Special instead of my military and police. Well, the S&W is again available for folks who want it.

My 686CS revolver was made as a 4" revolver which actually measured 105.14MM. I know of two other CS 686 revolvers with similar length barrels all registered as "Restricted". If you have a 4" S&W and it is registered Prohib you might benefit from the use of a caliper and measure the "4" barrel. It well might be longer than 4" or >105MM. The late Ken Soucie put me on to this.

I have not measured any newer revolvers, most older ones are spot on 4 in,
But I have run across a couple 39's 9mm that are over the 105mm, so could be re registered Colt don't seem to use extra iron in their barrels either.

The 686 US Custom guns go back to the 80's so I am not so sure the older ones are as spot on as you think. IIRC Ken mentioned the Model 10's and K frames as being the ones he checked. Ken is gone now so I have no way of checking with him.

If I owned any Smiths with 4" barrels I would check them to be sure. You could get lucky.

Already checked any 4" S&W's I have & sadly, none are slightly over to qualify as 'restricted'.... :(

I recall Ken Soucie when he lived in Victoria. IIRC, he was pretty slick at a Cowboy Action match I was at back in the day.

The Ken Soucie I knew lived in Windsor, ON. Canada's only 5 Division Master in IDPA. Retired Sgt. Major, Cdn Army. He died of a heart attack while picking up material at a Hardware store for an IDPA shoot the next day. I have a photo of him shooting on the top of the www.idpacanada.ca website.

He was one of the nicest men I met during my tenure as AC for Canada. The sport misses him.

the vast majority of model 10s in canada are ex-police 12(6) 4 and 2 inch models...quite a number of surplus 5 inch M&P (pre model 10s) in 38 S&W (not 38 special) were sold here...when buying new most opted for the model 15 with adjustable sights or the 357 models 13 or 19....btw the 5 inch ex-rcmp model 10s were exported due to the anti-gun nature of the govt...stupid is as stupid does...

The RCMP still have some of the Model 10 5" models is stores to this day. The former Dog Man here in Terrace used a brand new one to use as a training aid for his dog. I got to shoot it before he used it with his dog. He would drive down a rural road and toss the gun in the ditch, drive further down and turn his dog loose to find it. When I saw it last the gun was beat to hell from gravel, boulders etc , It made me almost cry. I even offered him one of my Noncos to trade before the Model 10 was used by him and his dog. He of course could not do something like that and the offer was in jest but man what a waste.

Those give inchers were about the perfect size for balance etc. I have a 5" in my gun box when I go to the range now. It is just a fun shooter and with 148gr WC lead bullets a tack driver.

My 19-2, 4 in is so close, that If I shoot the hell out of on a hot day, it makes 105.001 or 2, cold it is under, When the CFO was here, I showed him, he just smiled at me.
I haven't had any custom shop stuff since before C68 F**** us up. Colts I have checked are spot on. The 4 in 586 (L frame)I check a few yrs ago was just under.
Python light 4 in 101.38mm

Get hold of a firearms verifier. Invite him down to measure the gun at 4:00PM. You arrive at the range at noon shoot the gun until 4, then get him to measure the gun barrel. I should not have to explain the process to you.

The above is in jest but maybe not. Just saying.

If it is over you are golden.

I suspect that most shooters opted for adjustable sights; this would reduce the number of Model 10s sold commercially.
I have a couple of M&Ps, a US Property Victory Model that may be unfired, and a 4" ex-police in .38 Special. It is one of my favorite shooters. Have it set up with original grips, with one of those plastic grip adapters installed. Should I ever need to reclassify it, there is a new 6" barrel tucked away.

My S&W 39-2 is right on the 105 mm. When I get around to it I'm going to re-check all my 4 inchers. A few years back I did check a few of my revolvers by sliding a feeler gauge between the cylinder and forcing cone and dropping a dowel rod dowel down the barrel. Ran a 360 degree ring around the dowel rod with a carpenters knife. If memory is correct there were a few on the border line?
