Some of you must have wacked a spring bear by now..... Where's the pics? I'm planning to haul the camper trailer out this weekend for the first outing of the year, and hopefully fill a bear tag in the process. just wondering if anyone has filled any tags yet.

We have two brand new ones and both were hit well within days. Trail cam pics of one but can't figure out how to upload onto here aside from the outside posting sites.

Well the ditches are really starting to green up here this last week, so the bears shpould be starting to show themselves more soon. I personally haven't seen any here yet, but hoping this weekend will change my luck.

Saw a XXL size grizz' this morning, on the way to work. I estimated 8-1/2' and 600lbs+. It stood and looked at us from 20 yards - just across the ditch - and wouldn't you know it's the first day in a month that I didn't take my camera!!

On the way home we saw a 'dink' black bear.

Here's my first Black Bear ever and it was with my bow, It's not huge but it was the biggest one I saw at our bait.

Well we decided to sit in our stands after supper again on May 7th, we had been sitting earlier that day but had no luck and didn't see any bears so we decided to switch it up and have my girlfriend quad us into the site. She waited until we were actually up in our stands before taking off, low and behold the first bear we saw came 15 min after she left. it was a smaller bear probably 2/3rds the size of this one. We had been expecting the bears to come in the opposite direction and to our surprise he appeared coming down the trail we walk into the site as well. This first bear had no fear and came right up to our stands and started sniffing and looking up at us from right below our tree stands. At this point we were getting a little worried that this bear was going to start climbing the tree's we were in and the whole night would be busted but he lost interest and started lumbering towards a beaver we had just put on the top of the bait barrel in order to hopefully provoke more bears to come right away. First thing that bear did was grab that beaver and took off into the muskag with the easy meal and we didn't see him again that night. About 20min later we started to hear what sounded like something heavy moving through the muskag probably 100yds in and the sound would stop for a few min then we would hear it again. Slowly but surely the bear I shot with my bow lumbered out of the brush and made a walk of the perimeter of the clearing we had our bait site in. A few min after he got there he sat down right beside the barrel and proceeded to pull the logs out and try to have a meal, this was all going good for him until a squirrel came and he got back up on all fours. He was so preoccupied with this squirrel trying to false charge and this is when I made my move. I slowly stood up and grabbed my bow waiting for the moment when the bears head was turned toward the squirrel and drew back. A second later my arrow was flying through the air and hit it's mark. The shot was a pass though and he started spinning around trying to bite at his wound, this went on for maybe 15 seconds and he started crawling away real slow but only made it 10yrds from where I shot him. It's all fun until you make the shot then the real work begins.

congrats acrstarter!

the drop off strategy can really make the difference.

couple of thoughts:
-the bears come in where you do and check your tree because you've left scent behind before or been busted in your stand-wear rubber boots and be VERY scent/movement conscious
-sometimes just parking in a different spot when you go in works if you've been busted.
-they will circle the bait to see if you or other bears are around
-listen to the squirrels, they will let you know when bears are coming long before you hear them
-wire that beaver to a tree or to the barrel ;)
-afternoon hunts are usually fruitless unless you want to see smaller bears
-small bears come in early to avoid the bigger bears that come later
-make a track trap at your bait so you know what bears are on it
-have as much fun as possible, spring bear season is a great time to be on the land!

Thanks, We do have two trail cams set up one with video and the other taking stills so we know this was the biggest bear coming for the past 3 weeks. Thanks for the ideas and thoughts

nice to see someone got a bear. went out on Sunday and saw 3 little guys but that was it. May refinance the house this week to get another tank of gas for the truck and try again this weekend!
