Where are the squirrels?

Within the last few months I acquired my PAL and H1 outdoors card along with a small game licence. As squirrel season has recently opened, I've been out in my local woods for hours each day for the last week, ranging from sunrise, evening, and even entire days out there. I did my scouting earlier in the summer and found a number of good spots in my local public forests. Areas with high concentration of oaks, and cuttings on the forest bed.

In the last week, in various forest tracts, I've seen nothing but red squirrels, and 100's of chipmunks. Not a single grey to be found.

Whats really frustrating, is every time I come home from a hunt, I see 2-5 greys in my back yard. Unfortunately, I live in city limits with a no discharge by-law.


Im not loosing hope or giving up, but man that gets under my skin.


I live in Orillia and have been hunting in the Simcoe County Forests [yes, I have my OFAH membership]. So far without any luck.

If anyone knows of any good spots in my area, I'd be very grateful to hear about them.
 
come to the west side of Vancouver UBC area we have as many as you desire black and grey ones all you have to do is look at the bus cable they walk on them
 
I took a nice back squirrel out of a simcoe
Forest sept 25 with my air rifle. Like you I saw
Lots and lots of reds, I was just quietly as possible
Waking down a trail, looked behind me and there
It was running up a tree.

I have a feeling the reds know they can't be hunted,
And don't bother to hide, and the blacks/greys know they
Will be hunted and make themselves scarce.

Just keep at it, learn to walk quietly and you"ll
Eventually succeed!
 
I get a few each year after the leaves have fallen. I like to sit and watch for them and snipe them with my scoped c.z. .22. If they see you walking through the bush they take off and dont stop so you need a shotgun to hit them. one minute theres non out, then you will see 5 or 6. this is always during the last half hour of daylight. i have sat for hours or walked from around10 in the morning till supper time and i am lucky to see 3 or 4, but the last half hour of light they all seem to come out.
 
I am in Orillia too and often walk my dog in those forests. I rarely see grey squirrels in them. A lot of those forests are planted white pine so that might have something to do with it. Which ones are you going to?
 
So far I've ventured into Silver Creek, Slesser, Rogers, and Schumacher. All with no luck. Supposed to be going out with a friend this week for partridge and grouse. Maybe I'll get lucky and manage to drop a few then. Going to some privately owned land that we have permission to hunt and them bush chickens are everywhere on his land. He got 5 grouse within an hour last week.
 
Yeah, I have never seen anything more than a Robin in Slesser. It is pretty thick bush and there is a lot of cover so you would think it would hold more but they must hide well.
 
Hopefully once we get a good frost and the leaves drop I'll have better luck. No doubt they are out there, but with the thick foliage, they are very difficult to see.
 
I find you need to be quiet sneaking around and sit for 15 minutes every 100 yards or so to really see how many squirrels are in the bush. Many times I've walked through squirrel infested woods without seeing a single one until I start hunting them like deer and then it's game on. They're nothing like the ones in your backyard...
