I want some 170-180grn basic .308 projectiles. I see bags of bulk 150grn, but only small expensive boxes of fancy bullets in heavier grain bullets.

I don't need any fancy tips, super hunting rounds or 1000 yard accuracy. Just basic FMJBT that is fairly consistant.

PS, same question for .323(8mm mauser) as well.

i got 2000 rds of 155gr plated 30 cal projectiles for my garand for 170$/1000... not super accurate but fine for plinking still targets.

I believe serbinator's plated bullets are from Frontier. He can confirm that though.

I've never heard of 170-180gr FMJBT bullets being sold at retail. 7.62x51 NATO is mostly 147-150gr bullets but there are some special purpose match cartridges the US military uses that are 173gr. I've never heard of them being sold in bulk though. I've never seen a .308" FMJ bullet in bulk that isn't somewhere around 150gr. Do any of the major manufacturers even make one?

For 168gr I shoot Hornady HPBT match or AMAX. They run $39/100, $99/250, or $199/500 locally for me (easy to remember because it always comes out to $.40/each). They aren't SMK's or Berger's but they're also less money.
For cheap plinking/fun shooting I cast my own bullets. 160gr, 185gr, and 200gr in .309" to .311".

8mm isn't cheap any way you look at it. The days of cheap surplus 8x57mm are long gone. What surplus is still available isn't much cheaper than new factory 308 loads and bullets tend to be just the premium ones. Even "cheap" FMJ bullets in 8mm are often $40-50/100. I don't have an 8x57mm at the moment but did cast and load for two in the past. Cast 200gr gas-checked bullets let me get a lot of trigger time without breaking the bank.

Where did you get these? What brand are they?

got them from a buddy whos distributor for frontier metal processing co. they make plated/lead/copper/brass bullets, based out of south africa. their pistol projectiles are good quality :), i get 124gr RN 9mm 100$/1000 cash. 147s is 80$/750. :D

i heard that the plated 30 cal is being phased out.. not 100% sure about that though.

One thing to keep in mind is that it may be difficult to find a 170-180 grain bullet that is actually similar in shape to the GP11 one. The GP11 bullet has a long ogive and a short bearing surface to match the short throats found on K31s.

Most readily available bullets have to be seated pretty deep in the case; In my experience, the crimp groove on Hornady 150 grain FMJs ends up well below the case mouth.

Good riddance.
