Where are you and Why?

Wow, some people should get out more often. There is life outside of the GTA.
I live in Northern Ontario cause I love it, Worked in Forestry most of my life but seen the writing on the wall and slowly changed over to mining. When all your familly is around I couldn't see myself moving. But IF I win the Lotto I would get myself a place that is crawling with Deer and live there for the month of Nov. :D

I live in Cranbrook BC during the week and out just outside of Jaffray BC on the weekends. Take a look at google earth, god's country over here.

And I am 3 1/2 hours to Calgary (wholesale sports, Basspro, Homestead range), 3 hours to Lethbridge, both have good universities for the family.

I can hunt within 1 mile of my house in town, have a gun range (1500 yards)at my dad's. And our hunting seasons are pretty amazing really. Very good hunting without needing a draw like Alberta, and long seasons. Many area's with quad trails, a active sled club with groomed trails to the mountain basins, and generally very unlimited outdoor recreation.

Many people dream of living in such a place...

God's country, this. God's country that. Not to be contrary, but no one part of Canada is God's country. It is ALL God's country (okay, maybe except Toronto...) Consider yourself Blessed to be from Canada, and pick your location knowing anywhere here is better than most places elsewhere.

With that said- having lived in MANY locations around Canada- I am an Albertan, and currently live in Northern Alberta.

If you are fairly young, and willing to work, you can spend a few years here, and afford to send the children to school, and then retire anywhere in the country... Be warned most people come to make a living, and stay for the lifestyle.

The only thing better than living in BC is living next to BC (that way you avoid the mountain roads in the winter, and the HST... :p)
Not only do you have a good economy, by there is extraordinary hunting (with long seasons, and a good amount of the game is open...)
Decent fishing (but if you want great, BC is a short drive...)
And you are protected by an ocean of prairies from Ottawa...

I would wonder:?
Why go somewhere that you can get by. (But not go anywhere, but still do some of the things you love...)
When you can go somewhere that you can thrive. (Then go anywhere, and do all the things you love)

This is Canada, you will be happy anywhere you go (unless you are a fool), but I suggest you go with the place that gives you the most options.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,

Vair

The Okanagan Valley in BC

No better place in the world for fishing, hiking, hunting, shooting, outdoors+ throw in one of the prettiest landscapes in the world + semi-arid topography and climate..............Just to prove my point, the area doubles in population during weekends with Albertans.

If I moved from here, which appears unlikely, chances are pretty good we'd look at the southern Yukon. The climate is warmer than it is in northern Manitoba, the scenery is as good as BC's, and although I wouldn't live in any city by choice, the prices of goods and services in Whitehorse are more similar to Edmonton than they are to typical northern communities. If you like the ocean Skagway and Haines AK are only a short drive away. The hunting in the Yukon is legendary and if you like shooting . . .

Mike,

The Kamloops region would be a great place to move to. We have some of the best shooters in BC (If not Canada).

Our range will be getting extended to 900m in the next year or so.

If I would ever consider moving - THAT would be the place. Yukon all the way! However, I am "Alberta bound utill I die" ;).

I live in coquitlam (40 min from downtown vancouver) was born and raised here. I like the fact I can drive less then an hour in either direction and be downtown, or in the middle of back country. Tons of places to shoot, hunt or fish. I take my dog for a hike almost everyday up in the backwoods not accessible by vehicle and its right behind my house. O and I enjoy the selection of gun shops as well.

Great answers guys, keep it up.......... but... a few don't mention or show where they are NOW.

It's great to say move to THIS place but are you currently IN this place or are you planning a move?

What i'd like to know is how much chance is there of finding work as an Electrician? What's a house worth, I can't have the family
living in a place the size of a hunting cabin next to a land fill. What's a bungalo type house worth?, in town, out of town, etc.
Do I have to drive 2 hrs to get to a movie theater , where are the hospitals, 15 min. or 4 hrs? Schools for the kids (ages 22,12)
Dalhousie has a fantastic Marine biology set up for the 12 yr old, does B.C. offer something like this?

Mike.

You should come this way... I live in Sainte-Luce , Quebec the approx population is 3000 and the town is right by the Saint Laurent river (salty water) we are about 8 mins driving from Rimouski which has about 50 000 population with a University & College and a Regional Hospital. If your single and moving here then you wont be single for a long time since 60% of the regional population are womens. We have Hydro Quebec and Telus that are always hiring. Most of the people are living for the fishing and the Forest industry and lots of people working for the provincial and federal government in here. I moved from Brampton, ON to here about 14 years ago and I love it. Houses are going for 150 000 to 275 000 for a bungalow with 3 bed rooms and you get a land thats about 5000 to 8000 square feet in town. If you get out of town like me then you can have 40 000 square feet of land.

my 2 cent

Do you have a red seal? If yes, than you can practice as journeyman all over Canada and, particularly, in Alberta you can find work as a journeyman no problem. But then again, what would you like to do? Industrial, residential, comercial? This will determine your wage. Also, are you willing to travel or would you like to come to the same job site everyday? As for positions availablility in either province, check the job bank - will give you a rough idea:
ht tp://www.jobbank.gc.ca/intro-eng.aspx

Now, housing. Check the w ww.mls.ca. Choose the place you would like to move, narrow your createria and voila - you know the houseing pricing. But then again, you need somebody from inside to warn you if the neighbourhood you would like to buy in is suitable for living.

There are lots of social forums dedicated to the particular city. Like Connect2Edmonton or TalkCalgary and such. Once you choose the city/region - go to the local forum and read/ask. Will again give you rough idea of what the city looks like to live in for kids, attractions, social life, cultural events, etc..

Then, after you narrowed your choice down, come and visit. Better, if you would have some job interviews set up and some properties chosen to check out.

Then, after all that set and done, come to Edmonton and live happily ever after, lol! :D
