Saying that ........ I still like my twofiftyseven better.
I have your old .243 model 7 and I am glad you preferred your .257. Although now I want model 7's in more chamberings. Including a .257 Roberts.
Saying that ........ I still like my twofiftyseven better.
Only a 257 Roberts is a 257 Roberts...I love them...
Both spit 100gr bullets at about the same velocity.
The 243 is offered in far more current factory rifles.
The 243 fits perfectly in a short action.
There is tons of factory 243 ammo everywhere.
.243 brass is easier to find. There is a far better selection of 6mm bullets for hunting, varmints and long range shooting.
Other reasons I haven't thought of yet.![]()
A nice 760 in twofiftysevenroberts popped up for sale on 24Hr Campfire.
The best bang for the buck would be the Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 257 WHBY. The price on these rifles is hard to beat.

I had [sold it in a moment of insanity] a 257 Roberts in a 700 "Classic"
It would spit out the 100 grain Partition at 3300, and I don't think any 243 will do that.
With Reloder 22, the 120 partition made 3090, which is chasing the 25-06. Very effective.
I tipped over deer, moose and caribou with that Roberts, and it was my son's go-to rifle for 3 years, during which he shot several head of game.
Never had to shoot anything twice, as far as I can remember.
Never felt a need for a bigger 25 with that Roberts in hand. I should see if I can buy it back....I do miss it!
Regards, Dave.
I thought I seen one today on the EE but I just went back and looked and could not find it ,,,I was sure it was a rem 7oo or model 7 stainless with the fluted barrel and the engraving on the floor plate ,,anybody ells see this add ,,Dutch
Sorry for the delay ....... Been to PEI for the week and a bit out of touch.Yes... BUT, the .257" will also spit a 117/120 grain with larger diameter and carrying more energy...
True, but once you have the rifle, not a factor... perhaps for the terminally impatient.
Yep, and for those of "willowy wrist" and delicate sensibilities, for whom another half inch of steel is a major consideration, I would concur that the .243 is the more genteel selection.
Ahhhh, a great point, particularly for the aged... those who tend to leave principal items like ammo back home on the kitchen table... but, in most of those cases, the ammo is sitting next to the rifle...
If one was inclined to manufacture loads ad nauseum... this would be a significant concern... however, the 75 grain VM for varmints and the 117 BTSP/SST et al for mediumish/deerlike game, seem to work in just about every rifle I have tried them in...
Other reasons... such as;
"Cool factor"; Roberts over baby .308.
"Energy"; Roberts over baby .308.
"Non-Permanent statement of individuality (unlike the quintessential "MOM" tattoo); Roberts over baby .308.
Sorry for the delay ....... Been to PEI for the week and a bit out of touch.
RE: Above ^^ .... I think your reply agrees with my statements regarding to the 243 vs 257R.![]()
