There is a reason that Remington stopped making the Rem 600 Mohawk....short little 308 carbines kick like a mule, make a big flinch causing flash and loose a lot of velocity.
If you want one of those I know where you can get one.
I guess with the "tacticool" market of today such charactoristics in a rifle don't matter so much as being cool looking...form over functionality has prevailed.
Just came back from a week long course, my brother was shooting a 18" .308 Rem 5R with a 10X scope. Printed one group at 500M, 4 shots into 0.9" the 5th shot opened it to 2.9". Gun hung in MOA most of the way from there to 1000M where he was hitting a 22" plate 70% of the time in decently windy conditions. With a brake and Limbsaver recoil pad the gun was more than comfortable to shoot all day for the 5 days. Form and functionality both acheived!![]()
If you already have a 700 a cheap blank can the way to go. Being able to chamber and install myself negates the obvious drawback of the increased cost. A CM Shilen chambered is about 450$ then cera/dura/arma kote it yourself, used action about 400$, takeoff stock 100-200,
Still looking about 1000$ by the time you are done but barrel should be better quality.
1500$ for supply and chambering a premium blank?
no...broughton, krieger or shilen select match barrel chambered and installed 600-650$, action another 400-450$, rem r5 hs takeoff stock 300$
all depends what you want, lots of factory guns shoot fine but if you can't find the right chambering or other features it can be worth doing it semi custom
It would be illegal to chop your barrel below 18.5", yet, buying a riffle with a "factory" barrel below 18.5" is perfectly legal...Canadian Tire...
