When I first owned / shot S&W Model 29's in the 80's shooting full house .44's seemed kinda fun.
Not so much these days. Fav plinkers are 240 gr lead SWC reloads going out at about ~ 850 fps these days.

Funny, you should say this. I've got 220gr. SWC loads doing roughly the same speed over a very mild dose of 6.1gr. of Trail Boss. I've got a 7.5" Super Blackhawk, though a Model 29/629 would be fun as well.
I usually just use warm 44 Special level loads in mine. Easier on the guns and me. - dan
I just had this same debate for myself, and became hell bent on having to have a S&W 44 Magnum. Not a 357, not a 500S&W, a 44 Magnum.
Even though it wasn't quite authentic to Dirty Harry, I preferred the stainless look to black/blued, and I really liked the full underlug more than the half lug. Ironically, the full underlug is called the "Classic", even though the half lug (to me) looks older.
I finally chose the Talo edition 6.5", which are harder to find, but the normal 5" models are available practically everywhere. Pics online just can't give a sense of scale for the beefiness that it actually exudes in person. I have relatively big mitts, and it still feels/looks massive compared to the handguns I'm used to. Yes, a 460/500 would have been even bigger, but the 44 Magnum is the right amount of big.

N frame 29's are big guns, no doubt about that. (629 5" full underlug here). Like you say though, they are the "right amount of big". Can anyone who owns both tell me if the Ruger Red Hawk about the same dimensionally as the Smith, or smaller? (excluding barrel lengths of course)
Redhawks are a little bigger, though the grip feels smaller to me. Dan Wesson 44's are bigger yet, but have easily customized grips for better fit . Also the most accurate of my 44's. The Super Redhawks are another step up in size. - dan
I've got a 29-2 and a new 29 classic with the display case. The new gun is a fine shooter, MIM parts and all. Its a real nice gun. The polishing and bluing are excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to advise anyone to buy one if they want that "Dirty Harry" look in a new gun.
The 29-2 is a classic though. And I recently sent it to the S&W repair center as the carry up was out a hair. It came back retimed and it locks up tight now.
And S&W didn't charge for the repair. Not bad for a 40+ year old gun.
