My father and I just got our hunting licences and are looking for a place to get out and do some hunting. small game stuff to start and hopefully by the fall we will be able to get some deer tags. We live in southern ontario just north of Toronto and are having a heck of a time finding any where to go out. if anyone has some suggestions they would be much appreciated.

There are some Prov. hunting areas such as Nonquan near Port Perry, large tracts of Crown Land start around Washago and go north, so unless you know some landowners, those are your choices. For waterfowl in the fall, there are more choices, as the Gov. has areas set up for hunting, such as Luther Marsh or Tiny Marsh, Hullet Marsh, etc. One used to be able to get permission to hunt groundhogs, as the farmers considered them pests, sorry I'm not more help.
Your best bet is to do some networking with your family and friends to figure out who you know that has land you can hunt on (somebody likely knows somone) . If this doesn't pan out you may have to do some door knocking with local farmers/woodlot owners to obtain permission. Be prepared to have most of them say no as some hunters have ruined it for the majority with trespassing and property damage. Don't show up in head to foot camo like a Tactical Timmy! That being said some farmers are more likely to give permission for hunting pests like coyotes, turkeys and groundhogs but less likely for more popular game such as deer. Once you get permission do everything you can to stay in the landowners good books and you can have years of hunting.
I'd stay away from crown land and their fee paying lands. THe GRCA comes to mind!.
They are not well managed and are perdy much game less cause of all the fee paying public tromping all over everything.
I would honestly stay on private land where you at least know whats going on with the game and can pattern them under normal hunting pressure, which is maybe once every two weeks. Not everyday pounding, like shift work on the crown lands...

Google maps is your friend!!. that and the Ontario crown land use atlas.. depending on how far you want to travel, and what you want to hunt, you can make due with public land..
Turkey, (simcoe county forests are good, just make sure you are a member of the OFAH). Deer, Moose (you ahve to go further north!!). it can be done, but you need to do your home work.
BTW you don't have to pay for provincial crown land.. private forests like GRCA you have to pay for.

Simcoe County Forest is your best bet. The closest is about 1/2 hour north of TO, off the 400, just north of the Canal. You just have to deal with, and be aware of, many other hunters around you. It ain't the best place, but it's a start until you find some private land to hunt on. Good luck.
x3....and be aware that on weekends there will probably be more hunters than game in those woods
I usually have to get there about 2 hours before sunrise to get the spot that I have setup from the night before..
crown land down this way is def hard to get on,especially on weekends, I was lucky this year to have alot of weekday time,but when I did attempt a weekend hunt there were anywhere from 5-15 guys on a 60 acre lot and they thought they owned the place and would get snotty when you asked where the members of their group were in hopes of avoiding them. I usually just left.

When I lived in Brampton some years back I got hunting land by asking farmers. A few said no but many said yes. Some of the very best duck hunting I ever had was on permission land in the Cambridge area. Alot of the farmers I asked were more ready to give permission for deer hunting is you used a bow rather than a gun. Once in and land owner seen you were responsible often they would let you use a firearm.
