apologies in advance i know there are hundreds of help the newbie requests but im lost as to where to start with buying my first shotgun. I have already decided on a new rem 870, preferably with a combo. just not 100% sure of all the things i should be looking for before i finalise my purchase. i know to make sure it feels right and thats about it.

thank you in advance!

Hey Mikey,

It depends on what you want to use it for. Lots of 870 fans here. I own one. I use it as truck gun when Im out and about in the bush.
I don't use it for bird, although you could I guess. Also barrel length is something to take into account depending on your purpose.
Tactical fittings... I guess depends on what you are using it for.

Not much help I know.

The only way I figured out what I want and do not want in a firearm is by shooting, handling and stripping them down for cleaning.

Every one has a (more or less) specific purpose.

Grab the 870 and enjoy it.

Mack

Well, your well on your way to being a new gun owner.
So, what are your plans with it?
Have you researched how to take it down and clean it up?
You knowG-96 and simple green are two very popular cleaning products and that using a tea kettle of boiling hot water will clean the trigger group real quick.
What about the rough chamber issue?
Do you know how to fix that little pia ...it is easy, but has been the bane of many a new Rem. express owner in the past.
Not trying to scare your or sway your choice, just tossing some things you may or may not have heard.
Tight Groups,
Rob

apologies i plan on using it as main hunting gun with some occasion skeet shooting at my friends place, id like to mainly do deer and duck but as this is my first year i plan on hunting as much as i can of whatever i can to get a feel for the sport

yes i have done research and am aware of the occasional jamming issue and whatnot,

I think today there are better choices than a new 870, the older ones were great, the new ones not so much in my opinion.
I'd look at some others before I commit to getting one.

i have looked at the 870 and moss 500, mainly choosing it from the reviews and research ive done past few weeks and most of the guys i talk to say it was their first gun and/or their dads first gun and loved it

870 or SXP IMHO. The mossy wouldn't be a bad choice either. A combo with a rifled barrel is the swiss army knife of firearms.

870 pro is there are TONS of accessories for it- everything you can think of. Personally I have an SXP because I had other invector plus choke guns and didn't want to get into a different choke type. For the entry-point pumps see if you can go to a shop and hold them all- they are similar but different enough that you may have a preference.

Gun fit is by far the most important feature when selecting a shotgun, simply put if the gun doesn't fit you be able to hit anything with any consistency. Make/quality will be next, action a distant third, gauge fourth.

I also like my Winchester SXP combo model, and I've used an 870 and already own a Mossberg 535 combo. The SXP is my go-to.

I'll also add that you should go to a shop and hold each model you are interested in; some will just "feel" better or more solid, etc.

And don't let any salesperson rush you, take your time and buy what is best for YOU.

You've really given us nothing to work with.

What's your budget?

What do you plan on doing with it?

Have you fired a shotgun before?

Do you know what "feels right" means?

The 870 is still a good gun! If it fees right that is a good start. Try and have someone that knows guns ( maybe a trap or skeet shooter ) a help to make sure it fits. When it comes up there is no hunting around to get head and eye on the right plane. Welcome to the sport! Try what you can and have fun.

awesome thanks all for the tips, im deffinatly not rushing into anything without knowing 100% its the right gun for me

edit- budget is sort of up in the air, just looking for reliable beginner level gun, 4-500 maybe? and mainly deer/duck hunting with some occasional skeet shooting and ive fired the odd gun with my friends. as to fit right i have a rough idea, im bringing either my buddy or father in law to make sure i get right gun for me

Well - Your shotgun tastes will likely evolve with time (and affluence). Don't sweat too much over your first purchase, as it wont be your last. Remington 870 Express, Mossberg 500, their all about the same - just find the best deal around and pull the trigger.

And there is always a market for selling 870s, 500s, etc. of you decide later to move on to something else.

BigMikey; One thing I would recommend, contact the secretary or president of your local trap & skeet club, let them know in advance you're coming and would like to try a couple of different pump guns if possible. Most clubs, like ours, will try and accomodate you. This way you would be able to shoulder and fire a couple of different models, the membership will be able to give you advice on fit and what you should be looking for.

An 870 combo is a pretty good start, although there are equivalent models of the same in other brands.

With a combo shotgun you can hunt big game, hunt waterfowl, partridge hunting, and target/skeet shooting.

Although its not perfect for everything, nor long range big game shooting, it will at least get you in the game.

thank you all for the help and info i shall take it all into consideration and maritinestorm i shall definitely try to get ahold of the local gun club
