Where do you find tin?

Tin is more so for helping the lead fill out the bullet molds not for hardness. Antimony is what you want for adding hardness to your lead. If you buy 95/5 lead free solder you get 95% tin and 5% antimony.

You can also get tin from pewter objects, which usually has antimony as well.
 
Interesting. Boy I have a ton to learn. Have a bunch of friends at my club who have been doing this a lot time. I will take one of them up on his offer to show me the ways. Casting seems like interesting stuff.
 
That's one of the best ways to learn for me, hands on. I actually got into casting by accident when I wanted to shoot glue gun bullets in my 45acp. Bought a cheap Lee mold and used it to make the glue gun bullets. Figured I may as well try melting lead and the rest is history, well only 3-4 years ago. I cast for everything I own now accept for 22lr obviously, though a company just started making molds for them lol.

Rotometal in the states sells it, but they say you have to get it real hot to mix with your pure lead. For your 45 bullets they are pretty forgiving in terms of not leading with softer alloys. If you find pure lead and mix it with 95/5 solder you should be fine as with slow 230gr loads. Getting it the right size is more important.

For my 45's I use wheel weight watered down with pure lead, about 15lbs of ww and 5lbs lead. With the powder coating or ben's red I haven't had an leading issues.
 
I know Bill well :) I bug him on a regular basis about this stuff. He's been fishing at the cottage but I haven't relented and have been bugging him on email. Bill is one of the nicest guys I know anywhere.

if you get some range lead, i can trade for SPP 45 brass :)
 
I picked up 5lb. of SN100C leadfree Electropure bar solder for work. It is 99.5% tin. Cost was $150. Nice thing is when it's time to clean out the solder pot and replace the alloy, I get the old stuff!

I managed to get all stocked up on SPP brass today. Bought some from a fellow CGNer and picked up 200 rounds of loaded Blaser Brass ammo so I can shoot my 1911 before my pistol reloading setup is done. I'm at 500 pieces which is MORE than enough for me since all I plan to do is plink!

Man I did miss out on the CGNer that is giving away 150lb of lead! Didn't in in time!
