I am looking at cleaning copper fouling in my Remington 700p.

Anyone know good places to get Sweets 7.62, Shooters Choice or JB's Paste.

There may be other good cleaners. Hey if you other brands that do similar jobs please let me know.

Also I am looking for a Bore Guide. I've heard the MTM line is crap - any recommendations?

Thanks for any help!

I'm using Butch's Bore Shine. Don't know how it works compared to the ones you listed 'cause I've never used them.

I have a Dewey Bore-Guide and cleaning rod. Nicely built, I like them.

I get stuff liike bore guides anmd ammonia based solvent from Russel's , Wholesale, etc.
For speciallized stuff I go to Sinclair, or to Paul Reibin in kamloops.
1(250) 372 7030.
He has everything for precision shooters.
But in the Ontario area try Wes at Ellwood Epps .

Ive got some pretty fast and nasty fouling .224's and have found Wipe-Out to be super. You can actually see the copper getting cleaned out as the cleaner turns a bright blue. It doesnt damage any metal or wood, is odorless and gets your bore shiny:D

I have found that the Scott "sponge towels" that are 13" wide are really quite useful for cleaning guns, they stay together and are useful for cleaning the various bits.

louenfield,

Since you are in the GTA, go up to Williams Arms in Port Perry. John has Sweet's instock aswell as a full line of Dewey and Stoney Point products. Great service and great prices. I use Sweet's copper solvent, Dewey rods and brushes and Stoney Point bore guides.

If you're having copper fouling problems, this is what I do in my Savage 10FPLE. I use a rubber plug in the muzzle and fill the barrel with household ammonia, let sit for 15-20 minutes, pull the plug, drain the barrel and run a boresnake (dry) through it. Clean as a whistle. All of the copper "foul-outs" are ammonia based.

Thanks for all the great replies.

Now I have some research and ordering to do.

I like the idea of straight ammonia as I prefer cheap solutions!

Jason is correct about all the copper solvents being amonia based, but make sure you do this in a well vented area no matter what you use. There are so many ways to clean your rifle, all I know is, when the paches have finished coming through blue, I once again run a bore cleaner through it and try it with the copper solvent again, as carbon and copper can build up in multiple layers. Get the copper solvent and a good bore cleaner and get a good rod and bushes with a good jag, (I prefer the Parker Hale style) and patches and then, with what the guys here have told you, come up with what works best for you.

I use the Sinclair bore guide and I also use it as a tube to squirt the barrel full of Wipe Out. Works like a hot damn...both the guide and the Wipe Out.

A Parker Hale jag, has a diamond print machined in it. You wrap the patch around it making for a tighter fit in the bore for picking up copper and other build up as it passes throguht the bore. I will Post a pic later today.

Williams Arms in Port Perry has both Sweet's 7.62 and shooters choice stuff. I got a Dewey full length rod ad bore guide from there as well. One slight advantage over the online places is that you can handle the merchandise before you buy. Also it is closer to the GTA than Epps.
