I'm a southern ontario resident who's going to be heading out looking for a Deer next november. I've heard about hunting in provincial parks, on private land with the owners permission and even a club that lets you book out land for deer season if your a member.

Where do you guys hunt for deer? What locations have been successful for you in the past? Does anyone set up feeders and Mineral licks in the off season?

Get a crown Land Map for the area you prefer , where I live there are thousands of acres of crown land , much of it never gets hunted. I personally hunt on my own private land. Respectfully Jim

Best advice I can give if your in the South is Knock on doors, knock on doors and knock on more doors. The more North you go the more crown land there is. But when you hunt on crown if you can tell an area is actively being set to hunt such as bait stations, shooting paths, hunting stand, trail cam etc, then try and find another area. Yes I realize everyone owns crown land but hunters need to respect each other and for the most part there is so much crown it isn't hard to find a location that is not being used. If your looking for crown land pick up a copy of "Back Road Maps" available at most fishing and hunting stores look for Eastern Ontario, Algonquin and the Northern Maps. These will give you a good indication of where the crown land is. Just remember these maps can easily be out of date. It might say the road is a all season road when in fact it is now a 4x4 trail.

Have fun

I have hunted for deer on crown land, my place, my mom’s, and other people I know. We have been successful everywhere we went.
On private properties we set up mineral licks, make food plots, and put out trail cams. I would not try any of that on crown land or on private without permission. You never know what reasons a landowner will have for not putting out mineral licks, food plots, or trail cams.
For your first year I would try and hook up with someone to show you the ropes. Other than that look at crown land maps and find a place in the north or start knocking doors for the south. In the north there will be other hunters and in the south the same mixed with poachers who don’t have permission.

Once you've decided on the general area you want to hunt, do your scouting in the off-season. Walk A LOT! Cover the ground. Look for sign - scat, yards, trails, whatever. It's all there if you look carefully. Make sure you know what you're looking for before you go. Put in the long days and you'll get your prize in the end.

Private, and Crown, alot of Crown...Mostly in WMU.58...I have yet to be skunked, it's a great area if you know where to go..

Check out crown land, lots of units have no or very little hunting pressure. Cut overs, oak and beech ridges and cedar pockets can all be good
also get off the roads and trails. In Nov. of 2012 I hunted crown land for 10 days, I hunt alone and never seen another hunter off the roads and trails but lots on 4 wheelers and 4x4's driving these trails etc. I call them the WILD TV. HUNTERS. There are good deer on crown land you just have to do your homework.

Cheers Bill

There are huge areas of crown land not too far north of Toronto, but not many that you can get to and hunt without driving for a couple of hours. You need to get friendly with some hunters and join a hunt club/gang for best results. Take a week or two off work, and go hunting in depth for the best experience IMO.
One of the best places to meet your fellow hunters is at the range, but if you talk hunting at work, you may find that there are others there that hunt. People are not as open about hunting/shooting as they used to be. (SHOULD BE)

Failing that, you can hunt farms a lot closer to home, but you will need to spend a lot of time knocking on doors. This type of hunting can be done after work if it's close, and on weekends at your leisure.
I'm primarily a crown land hunter, and I stay in the bush for two weeks. If that fails, I get the crossbow out, and hunt closer to home on places I have permission to bow hunt.
