where do you shoot a skunk so it won't stink??

When they die the muscles relax and out comes the stink no matter what. Drowning doesn't rank very high on the ethical dispatch side of things but sure does help the stink.
After killing dozens of skunks over the years I say just man up and shoot it. You will smell normal in a couple days........ :D

Well if you get skunded :p try a pail of warm water, a table spoon of dish soap, 3-4 heaping table spoons of baking soda, and a 500ml bottle of peroxide. mix then wash. a guy at work got nailed 4 times in one week. he found this recipe on the internet and boy were we ever grateful!

Two words - swimming lessons.

A big rubbermaid tub filled with water will suffice if you are nowhere near a lake or river. From my experience that is the only way to ensure a "non-spray" destruction of the animal. Saves ammo too.

Too many post to read but my experience is with a 30ft/lb at the muzzle .22cal air rifle at a range of 25 yards, lasered. I helped my parents dispatch two skunks with a heart/lung shot over. A can of sardines helped keep them in place ;)

They crawled no more than 2 feet and stopped in their tracks dead. The first one released nothing but the second skunk released a bit of musk but it was not a all out spray.

Drowning, ether or chloroform is the only way to ensure no smell. Even in drowing they spray but it just stays in the water. So you need to drown in a creek or river to take the smelly stuff downstream.

Well I checked the trap line this morning and nothing, but I was kind of happy as I never tied a rope off to it, which is done now.
I agree with some of you that drowning may not be the most ethical, however if I have another alternative I will take it, but if it's at the expense of me having to use some of these deskunking recipies you guys have put on here...
I took another look at the trap and if I can manage to put 2-3 long bolts tied with rope through the trap to hold it in while I lift the door, then get away and pull the rope and the critter should be able to get out then dispatched.
It works in my head, I'll have to wait and see.

Use a live trap and when you get one drop a cardboard box over it and hook a pipe up to the exhaust of your vehicle to under the edge of the box, leave the vehicle running and walk away for 20 minutes or so, I have eliminated quite a few this way and never had 1 spray.

This ^^^^. One of my border collies got it in the face so close she had yellow liquid running down her face as I dragged her back in the house to the bathroom. (I fear no woman!) It worked so well she got to sleep in the bedroom that night..... and so did I! :D

The back 40...preferably of someone else's quarter.

I find that my old goose ammo, 1 7/8oz of #2 shot. Aim for the head, contrary to what my avatar tells you. :D

best place to shoot them is far, far from your house..... Smrt alick eh??

I've tried hitting them at the base of the skull (severing the brain stem) with a 55 grn nbt from a 243, hits fast and sort of freezes them for a minute until thier nervous system goes static and they spaz a bit, but usually don't spray. It's a hard shot to guarantee and you may or may not be successful everytime you try it.

In the event that you fail and stink things up, joe's hand cleaner will take the smell off of your skin and hair. It will dry your hair out a bit, but which is worse.
I found this out when i killed a skunk with a 3/4" wrench by the bbq pit at a motel.........and ended up reeking.

lmfao! :D :D

I know this maybe shouldn't be in the hunting forum but..
My golden retriever got a little shot of skunk juice last night, so I headed out with the flash light and the 22. I heard it walking in the deep grass behind the shop but I never ventured into the deep stuff. One stinky thing is enough for our household. Which brings me to my question. Is there a perfect spot to shoot a skunk so it won't spray or piss out it's perfume?
I've used the 223 shot them in the head, ass, guts and somtimes have gotten away with no stink. I've used the 12 guage, 22, one even got the 270. Somtimes the clean up isn't too bad other times it's a drive by with the quad and a fishing net after a couple days if my stupid (now stinky) dog hasn't drug it on the lawn and rolled around on it, (Yes it happened).
I know if I have one around I probobly have more so if anyone has some advise for me to make the skunk cull easier and as pleasant as it can be, I would like to hear your advice.

Where to shoot a skunk?.....from far, far away:)

If you live in the country with no nieghbores around, and it's legal to shoot a rifle, I would use a good scoped 22, and shoot it in the head. Then step back for 30 minutes. Not much else you can do. Unless you can get the skunk in an open field about a 100 yards from the house, and shoot it with your 223. That way your safe from the stink. Problem with hi power rifle and shotgun is it can open the piss sack, and

If you have nieghbores close by, I would call animal control and let them do their job (but good luck on that one).
