Where i can find a Smith & Wesson Model 29 New

I know you want a new one, but older Smiths are way nicer! Just my humble opinion!

The newer ones are a better choice for shooting, as opposed to collector pieces, since they have reinforced internals for improved durability compared to older models (29-3 and earlier). Yes, the zit in the frame for the internal lock is unsightly and the MIM parts look a little chintzy, but they are generally perfectly serviceable. Future parts availability might be a concern, as S&W started the transition to MIM parts 20 years ago.

As to nicer, it depends. The real "good old days" for S&W would be prior to being sold to Bangor Punta in 1965. Model 29s from this era are without question unparalleled in quality of finish. S&W's output gradually declined in quality throughout the Bangor Punta era until about the late 1980s.

Just picked up my 29-10 2 weeks ago and it looks/shoots fantastic.Came with a nice wooden box with blue velvet inside.I have older Smiths and newer ones also.Apples and oranges to me.So far I haven't been disappointed by any.

I beg to differ. I have a 629-1 from the early 80s and there is nothing wrong with it in the durability department. I would pick that over a current model any day.

29 smith

i am recieving a 29 in 10.3/8 bbl soon as it clears i may not keep it ....but will long enough to try som acc loads at longer ranges....you boys have any good starter loads for the gun and how far im not a big hg shooter thanks

I was sad to sell my 29-10 for medical reasons, since then i have bought a S&W Model 69 44 mag.

I would not take back my 29 for my 69, it has become my favorite 44 mag.

Why do you prefer the model 69. I think it's a L frame?? You would be better served with a N frame? No?

I think it's a better shooting gun, it's stronger, the trigger is exceptional and the fact that is smaller i like it. It is almost the size of a k frame.

Approximately how many rounds do you have through it?

My 29-3 broke a hand and trigger stud (which required a trip to the warranty centre to repair) somewhere in the ballpark of 3-4k rounds of about 50:50 light and heavy loads. I can't say how much it was shot before I owned it, but probably not a lot, judging by the condition.

Anyway, to summarize the Endurance Package upgrades for those who are curious:
-New yoke retention system
-Radiused frame studs
-Longer stop notches in cylinders
-Reinforced cylinder bolt
-629s also have enhanced yoke and frame heat treament

Models 29-5 and up and 629-3 and up incorporate the full set of these changes. These would be the optimum choice (if you can find one) if you want to avoid MIM parts but want a "shooter grade" gun.

I wouldn't necessarily dissuade someone from picking up one of the older guns, particularly if they can get one for a good price relative to buying new. They are likely OK for most users. My intent is to point out that there are pros and cons of new versus old.
