Digging through the stash, found this spam can of 7.62x54r. I have had it so long, I can't remember where I got it from, or where the ammo is made.

So where was this 7.62x54r made?

Edit - The wooden crate is long gone.

any more writing on the can ? would the English writing have been stamped there at production or later...…..

my guess is the sides of the cans have some more writing on them?

I will make an opening guess of PRC Peoples Republic of China

In 1961, likely Russia or a soviet bloc, any other markings on the can? a picture of the headstamp on a round may be helpful.

Nothing else written or stamped on the can. I didn't want to open it just cause it's sealed and I was gonna sell it on the EE.

I've been looking through pictures and pictures on google, can't find anything.

That looks like the stuff Canada Ammo brought in back in 2012 from Norinco. It was supposed to be non corr but it was mostly corrosive. I still have two full crates of it. It was made in 2011 and the 61 is the factory I believe.

this is the best I could do for you... if you look hard on the cans the printing is similarly stamped but for a different year. It was listed as PRC on the webpage I found it from.

same galvanized steel

similar type set (though layout is different, may be stamped in a crude press or with dies by hand resulting in production pattern differences on the top of the cans)

yours must have been kept slightly better than these cans were

If the can says anything its definitely corrosive

Its Chinese Machine gun ammo. Canam was bringing these about 5-6 years ago. It came in 1000 rd crates, two spam cans of 500 rds. On the lid of the crate there was list of chinese machine guns and bullet deviation tables at certain distances. So this ammo is not the most consistent lot. I shot about a crate of this stuff and you get a plinking ammo at best. They all go bang, its new 2011 production ammo, just don't expect stellar accuracy. And yes it is corrosive.

the 440rd cans were pretty accurate in my repro PU sniper.... astonishingly so. 4rds out of 5 within an inch at 100m with the 5th being within 2, not sure it that was me or the ammo (likely both but more me). Hands down the most accurate ammo I have for that rifle. The Barnaul shoots better out of the carbines and other rifles I have though. Plus the PRC ammo is I think the hottest 7.62x54r ammo that I have.

never tried the machine gun ammo, good to know about the 500rd tins that they are commie bulk packs. From my understanding the idea for machinegun ammo, its not all about accuracy but also dispersion because a machine gun is a supressing and group target weapon where minute of accuracy is not as required. Sounds like a bit of a pain compared to the other ammo available given the results expected from rifles and semi's.

If it is Chinese, it was manufactured for their allies at the time. You will find Chinese cans usually have Chinese markings on them. Chinese produced for Albania for example, so those were for export without Chinese language.

makes sense. Could have been from all over Africa as well. The Chinese armed many African nations.
