hi, i am thinking about buying a .454 Casull and wanted to know who carried ammo for it? Marstar and Cabelas are the only places i can think of, prices would be a great help too. From looking at Cabelas and Marstar the average seems to be $1.75-$2 a shot (taxes, shipping) is that about right?
Thanks in advance

They are not cheap to shoot for sure. Couple of bucks per round sounds about right.

Reloading is the way to go and if you shoot any amount at all your equipment will pay for itself in no time.

Definitely get into reloading. Even .45 colt is pricey. My store sells Winchester 250grn JSP for about $40\20. According to WInchester's ballistics it's pretty wimpy stuff too. Only 1300fps.

Elllwood Epps in Orilla i beleive has it most likely more than $2 a shot....relaoding is the way to go, i would also like a big bore handgun but the ammo cost always held me back now that i started relaoding i might get a .454 or .460 or soemthing:p....

both my local stores carry it , but why get carried away shooting 454 all the time, buy some 45 long colt for it and have some fun.

For economy purposes I agree with feeding it 45 Colt but as I have said before:

Would you buy a Mustang with a 4 cylinder engine in it?;)

Reloading is the way to go....

If you are thinking on buying a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull shoot one first. I did and man:eek::eek: that is one crazy round. I would only shoot .454 as a last resort with that gun. My friend owns one and will be the first to admit that the gun works great with .45 Colt and .454 is a handfull (sore one).

tell him to learn to shoot... my 4.2 inch super redhawk is fun to shoot with full power 454's....

hi i load my own dies are 35bucks the brass is 85 bucks for a 100 winchester brass it takes small rifle primers at a hundred for 5 bucks and a pound of powder either 296 winchester or Hodgson H-110 about 28 bucks a pound and jacketed 250 or 300 gr. about 33 bucks a 100 just to give you an idea and yes this 454 Casull will leave you in pain not a target gun lol.i can only handle 3 shots with mine and load 39 grains of hodgson H-110 and a 250 grain bullet thats it and what power at almost 2000 ft/second.I alsmost thinking of selling mine because its no fun to shoot full power loads 454's in it the 45 Colts is like shooting 44 specials in a 44 Mag. but thats your choice i would try one out before you buy your choice...

39g of H110 pushing a 250g bullet? Have you checked your pressures??

I load from 240gr to 405gr bullets for my 454 Casull SRH and Puma M92 I load 38grs H110 with 240gr Hornady XTP-Mags = 1880fps from a 7.5" SRH and have perfect extraction they do 2300fps out of the 20" barreled M92.

If I up the load to 39grs I get very tight case extraction which isn't a pressure issue in a SRH it is that the metal of the SRH cylinder stretches/expands then contracts resulting in the brass expanding as well but brass doesn't shrink back down so it results in tight case extraction.

If the 250gr bullets are standard jacketed bullets you should not be loading them to top Casull loads the jackets aren't thick enough and will result in the forcing cone wearing out prematurely.

Due to this with jacketed bullets I only load Speer Gold Dots and XTP-Mags to top velocities.

Rigmover are you shooting a 5 or 6 shot SRH or a Casull why I ask is if you are shooting a 6 shot SRH you should be getting tight case extraction issues with that load.

I'm not saying pressure issues just tight case extraction.

Hi Camp Cook I,m shooting the SRH 6 shooter with 240 gr. XTP-Mag loaded with H-110 39 Gr. powder and no not having any issues with the brass expanding in the cylinders. They extract with ease. No problems here yet. I'm using brand new Winchester brass will see what happens when i reload them again maybe they expand when there loaded a few times don't know. I need to change these grips out there not very comfortable on the hand LOL what grips are you using i like to try the Hogues Decelarator and see if that helps .. It was a 240gr i was using not the 250 gr as i said in the first post my correction sorry..

I actualy prefer the stock grips and have Crimson Trace laser grips on my 4.25" SRH.

I've tried the other grips but switched back didn't like them.

hey rigmover, if you have a 7.5" srh shoot me your address and I will give you a uncle mikes belt holster and a pachmer decelerator grip for it.... free of charge.

got no use for them so might as well give them to someone going to use them... it is actually cams stuff that I got when I bought the pistol, now that the pistol is 4.2" bbl I don't need either.
