Where to buy 7.62x39 tracer rounds

Everyone needs to make up their own mind about shooting around or after dark...

The hunting regs are clear... but if I'm shooting paper targets...

Last year I wanted to do some low light shooting for a muzzle brake video, I called every agency I could think of and no one could give me an answer. Called the local warden branch as well and they agreed that's what the regs said but said if I'm obviously target shooting the hunting laws weren't relevant. No I couldn't get that in writing. So I also went in person to the RCMP detachment. They could find nothing on their books that I could be charged with for discharge of a firearm during those times or after dark.

Everyone I spoke with said the same things... It depends on the situation more than what is written in that hunting rule book...

This is NOT legal advise but I did spend days trying to get a firm answer on this and all I got was "it depends..."

Has anyone on here been charged with shooting after dark while target shooting?

That's actually good to know. I was going based off the hunting regs (obviously), but the way those rules are worded, it made it look like any discharge during full dark was illegal - and I assumed it might have something to do with some silly thoughts about not wanting to disturb critters at night - whether or not you were actually shooting at them.

Having said that, I will definitely not be firing off any Mosins, especially not an M44 or M38, after dark, way out in the countryside on private land owned by relatives who's nearest neighbours are miles away and out of earshot of even a Mosin, and I've never done anything like that in the past. Nope.

No one should take my previous comments as agreeing with the regs, just that you need to take caution and know what they are.

And back to the OP's question: There is almost always one or two guys with tracers for sale at the Easter Gun Show on the Stampede grounds. Don't expect to get them for cheap though. Think somewhere between $1-$2 per round.
 
Twice I have been lost and used my rifle to signal my plight and position. Once was several hours after dark. I was prepared to spend the night under a tree until I heard my buddies fire some signal shots.

My answering shots were tracer. Sound and visual cues.
 
I posted about tracers and mixed up orders not as a statement that these were necessarily illegal imports, but that CBSA has its job to do. If there is any suggestion that the manifest is incorrect, they are obliged to investigate. That time delay will confound already tight margins with the business community. There have been examples of mixed shipments of firearms arriving, which while good for collectors exposed the businesses to undeserved heat and light. Anyone remember International Firearms? The feds decided they needed some "extra" attention, so they changed the rules, called some inspections and drove them out of business. Our own Marstar has had its share of troubles with ill informed and overly zealous inspectors (and I'm being nice with the language.)

The idea of carrying a magazine of tracer rounds for signalling is one I hadn't thought about. Yes, there were/are commercial tracers for this purpose, but I never gave it much thought until the experience noted above.

Read the act. Discharge of any firearm, no matter the reason, is illegal 1/2 hour after sunset (in AB, anyway). That the rule happens to be rolled into the hunting regs is irrelevant.

In BC is 1 hour before and after for all game except migratory game birds, then it's 1/2 before and after.

I have no idea about just 'shooting' is though.

Like Ganderite said, we've used signal shooting to pull lost guys out at night. We didn't have tracers though.
We used 2 shooters and triangulated the returns from the lost guy to find a direction.
