Where to buy a barrel vice in Canada?

Most smiths have a lathe and a mill, that's all it takes, and they are expensive for what they are. I made mine and I would imagine that's how most smiths get theirs, it isn't a difficult job. It isn't something the average gunshop would have in stock, although they may be able to order one in. Or just order one from Brownells

ive looked into ordering one from brownells but it sounds like it can take ages for your order to be approved by the ATF or whoever.

I guess i will just have one made.

Why do you need one? A lot of barrels you want to change? It takes a lot more than just a barrel vise... action wrenches and headspace gauges, etc.

I made this on my lathe and drill press. Started with 2 inch square stock... made it 1.5 inches thick x 2 inches high. The hole is 1.5 inches to accept bushings I make to fit the job. I have straight bushings at 1", 1.1", 1.150", 1.750", 1.200", 1.250"... and a few tapered for specific barrels... When installing a new blank barrel I always turn it to match the closest bushing.

Im aware that i will need an action wrench as well as head space gauges.

I just was coming a little short on where to get a vice, but it seems i have lots of options.

Hi guntech, would you inform me for the comparison sake the kind of bolts you are useing to press on bushing.
Like dia, NC or NF the lenght I presume somewhat shorter than 4". Mine are two bolts grade8 NF 5/8"x3" and so far they are working well the thread being 1-1/4" long in the lower part of vise.
Thanks, GR8.

I use Gr. 8 7/8-14s, but reversed, with the nuts on the top.

Wow! That's kind of bolt that Toolman Taylor would use!
Seriously what kind of torque do you aply? I use something like 60-75flb for majority of actions and close to 100flb for mausers and such. With good amount of powdered sugar very seldom I experience barrel slippage. I am afraid that more torque might flatten the chamber....

Used them because I had them. They work, so have stayed with them.
I use split aluminum bushings with powdered rosin.

Tiriaq, I wasn't make a fun of your choice and neither there is any doubt that those bolts do work.
I think that reversed bolts with nuts on top is a clever idea and that I am considering a change in my design.
No more money spend on expensive taps! I would save some time eliminating the tapping work as well....Hmmm.
Well, the lenght of thread on nut is much less than in tapped hole in vise but changing the bolt to NF 3/4" would eliminate all shortcomings IMHO. Thanks for great idea.
