Wondering where I can buy a shotgun choke and bore gauge perferably for 12,16,20,28 and .410 in Canada if possible or somewhere that will ship to Canada?
Yes amazon has one but not currently available for some time now.
Thanks
Bernie

ID gauges are available at tool shops.
You need to have guages that can meaure 4/10's up to 8/10's of an inch but you can get pretty close by reading the bore diameter stamped on the gun (if it's marked) and measuring the chokes with a set of calipers.

I was thinking of something in pocket to take to gun shows ( remember those? hoping they will occur again).
I see them online but not shipping to Canada or $100 for shipping. Anyone else have a suggestion?
Thanks

The best two are the skeets gauge and one very similar. They are both in the $150 range depending on the options. Somewhere I have contact info. Don't expect websites and search to find them. If you are really interested let me know and I will dig up the contact info.

When you refer to ‘in pocket’ I believe you are referring to the simple choke measure that some use. A bore gauge for properly measuring bore diameter needs to take accurate measurements 9-10” from the end of the barrel. Won’t fit in my pocket. SKEETS bore gauges work fine and were reasonably priced at less than $140 US but the business ( a gun shop in the US) was no longer making them when I last checked 2-3 years ago. Points to remember……
Shotgun bore diameters are nominal, not precise. EG, the nominal diameter for a 12 gauge is .729” but different firearm manufacturers fudge on this. Fixed choke and Mobile choked Beretta 12’s usually measure about .724-.725”. Browning’s Invector Plus 12’s usually measure about .750” yet both are nominal 12 gauge.
Any given choke constriction such as Full (.040” constriction) is relative to the bore diameter so the Full choke on that Browning is a much larger diameter than the Full choke on the Beretta but both will have the same degree of constriction relative to their bore size and will give similar patterns.
For this reason the simple tapered gauge that you insert into the muzzle is useless if your bore diameter is different than the standard .729”.
Only a proper bore gauge or inside diameter gauge will measure both bore diameter and choke diameter and then you can subtract the choke diameter from the bore diameter to get the actual amount of choke in thousandths of an inch. Then if you want a name such as Full or Modified to apply to this diameter you look it up in a table provided by one of the choke tube manufacturers such as Briley or Carlson.

I bought a set of true bore gauges from brownells years ago. I think they are like 600 bucks US now. Rest are just a quick reference at best IMHO
Cheers

I do realize the simple tapered gauge is not the best implement especially is the "over-bored" world but I was thinking of it's use in older guns pre 1950's of the double variety one was likely to find at a gunshow as part of it's evaluation.
I thought it was still of use especially in the smaller gauges which I am more interested in.
Useless or not but probably better than my finger, does anyone know where to find this useless instrument?
Thanks

Jim (Ashcroft), Skeet’s is back to making them. There was a disruption but that appears to be behind them last I checked about a year ago. And the other guy, in Montana I think, appears to make one as good or better than Skeet’s.

Thanks Canvasback, I need the small bore model, I’ll contact them. J.

I use a telescoping gage set with a dial caliper. Works well, but you have to push them through to the chamber if measuring at the muzzle end in past the choke. You will find that not all barrels or choke tubes are perfectly round when you measure them! Not cheap old guns either.

The telescoping gage set works well to measure drop at heel and comb as well....good investment for the price they sell for.

Ive always been more concerned with chamber length than bore and choke diameter. Brownells sells a chamber gauge set that includes a choke measure. They look like brass flat bar sheets. Would fit in the pocket but wouldnt give you a bore diameter

Oh wow. Thank you sir for that tid-bit of info. I didn't know any of this.

I have a brass one that fits in your pocket like a feeler gauge but slightly bigger....measures width and depth from 410 to 10 gauge and even includes a choke gauge. Great for gun shows etc. It is stamped GALAZAN New Britain Conn. USA. Perhaps if you google it, you may still be able to purchase it.
