OK I am looking to build a barrel block for my Edge and need a place to buy a piece of aluminum 2.25" by 2.25" and maybe 2 ' long just in case we screw up on the machining the first time around...

Also any suggestions as to what kind of aluminum to buy?? eg 6061 or 7075.

Thanx in advance

OK

Go to Metal Supermarkets in the West end or the New location on 75 street just north of the whitemud.

DO NOT buy from the rack, go behind the counter ( they will let you do this) and look in the cut off bins for the size and alloy you want. If they don't have the alloy in the cut off bins ask them to phone the other store and see if they have it in their bin.

The cut off bins are charged by the pound so it is a lot cheaper. If you have to buy a piece of the rack you will pay by the foot and have to pay a cutting fee to get the length.

FYI I would go with 6061, If I still built jet boats I would be able to get you a piece for free, but alas I move on to other metals to build things from.

I think that 5086 would be too soft and I think that you might not want to go too tempered for fear of it cracking later on.

There are a couple of companies that used to make small run molds for injection molding out of aluminum. Stamco and Drader are 2 that I remember. If you talk to the shop foreman at a shop like this you may get a scrap for free.

+1 for Metal Supermarkets on 75th, love it there.

I've bought tons of steel and aluminum there over the years, and the cut-off bins (as mentioned above) are THE way to go. Pete and the guys love cutting you a deal on the off-cuts; I've been known to fill up a good portion of my truck's bed with steel for less than $200 and a handshake.

If anyone ever needs good scrap, call Maple Leaf Metals on 50th street too, I practically stole some 1"x1"x1/8" ERW and 2"x2"x1/8" ERW back in the day... cents on the dollar for odd lengths between 6' and 8' that I used to weld up a materials rack for my garage.
