Hello Everyone,

I am new to the site and just got my PAL. I have always wanted an M1 garand and wanted to start doing some research on how to get one. I was looking at the CMP in the states and am not sure if you could buy one there and bring it over the border? Are there ways of finding them at retailers here? I have seen a few used ones but I am wondering how they got here? There seem to be so many variations its hard to know where to start.

Basically I am looking for a good shooter thats reliable and fun to start with then I would like to find a really nice original WW2 one. If I found one in the states how can you get them up???

Also I have read a few places you have to use special 30-06 ammunition as new rounds will damage them? where can you get these rounds? I have also seen them in 308 but not in canada. Suggestions????

Any help anyone has would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all for your time!

How much money are you willing to spend? Once that is established the rest should follow. It's not impossible to get them into the country, some of the dealers here specialize in doing it. Garands are hard to come by in Canada.

Keep an eye out in the EE. Every now and then a decent deal will pop up. Be ready to pounce, as they don't last long.

As for the CMP, unless you have US citizenship and are a member of the NRA or active competitor with proof, you don't qualify.

For my first one, around $1000 should be plenty. If it needs to be a bit more to get something good then I would be willing to save up. This would be for a non - original good shooter. Someday Id hope I can spend a lot more to get a ww2 original one if I can find one.....

If your serious, find the rifle you want to purchase in the US, either via a gun store, dealer, or Gun Broker. Contact Prophet River and they will fill in the blanks. Importing a firearm that doesn't carry any " excessive baggage" with respect to the AWB is too easy. I know cause I've done it. Cheers

"Excessive Baggage": flash hiders, folding stocks, Barrel < 16", prohib in Cdn, etc.

That is an action not a complete rifle.
If you are serious about an original World War II rifle there is a pre Pearl Harbour one in the EE for $5000:eek:
Keep your eyes on the EE and know exactly what you want and are willing to spend because there are plenty around. Do your research.
As for the US importing I'm not an expert but I think your money is better spent here instead of on importation fees for your first rifle.

There are still good, solid rifles available in the $1000 - $1400 range. Do a search for "garand" on the EE. A $5000 price tag would only be appropriate for an original piece excellent with all correct parts - and it would need to be a something like a rare M1C sniper rifle or an early gas trap model which commands substantially more.

The rarest and nicest collector grade rifle of the common gas port variation shouldn't be worth more than $3500, tops. For that price it should be the rifle that Eisenhower used for sunday afternoon plinking sessions out behind his CP.;)
