where to buy rest sand..

im trying to find places to buy sand to put in a rear shooting rest. having little luck with it. any special sand that goes in it, or would sand from a lumber store for a sandbox or for mixing cement work ?

Plain clean sand should be fine.

I use glass bead in my rear bag and it works great.

The glass bead is used for bead blasting. It is also the same bead they put on the road lines after painting as a reflective.

Sand or lead shot if you want it heavy. Perlite if you want it light for hunting but you have to keep adding. I also have a light bag with crushed walnut shells (brass cleaning/polishing media.

Sand for sand blasting, its less sensitive to weather changes and clumping.
Same sort of sand they put in ashtrays.

You can buy pool filter sand at any pool supply store works great just add a couple of tablespoons of corn starch and mix with the amount of sand you need to fill bag, make sand slide in funnel easy.

I once went to the range for a week end match and forgot my bag. I took a wool sock and filled it with macaroni. Light and worked well. Would make a real good bag for hunting. Rain would make it interesting...

I had a bag filled with split peas. Awesome to shoot with. Then it rained, and it got wet. (had it in the blind) What a ####ing mess.

I'm thinking about heading into a craft store and seeing if I can't find a small plastic ball/pellet to refill it with...

what about airsoft BB's? (yes, i said the A word) i'm guessing they might work well. pretty cheap too.

luckily i work in a Fastener store, so i just use percision ground ball bearings. I get them dirt cheap with my discount . Not only that but electronic ear muffs, synthetic motor oil all cheap cheap cheap.

What you are looking for is called Silica Sand. It is typically sold in bags at building supply stores (not the Home Depot type of building supply) It is uniformly graded and you can get it in a fine and course grade. And yes, it is similar to sandblasting sand, but usually much cheaper.

I use rice in my rear bag. It gives a little more than sand when I squeeze it, and it's not as heavy. Same deal as with the peas tho, just dont get it wet.

I just made a front bad and filled it with up with unpopped popping corn. Seems to work great so far. Making a front bag for the hood of the truck for coyoute hunting as well.

Oh god, whatever you do, don't use food (rice, peas, etc...)!!! You'll regret it if/when it gets wet.

Go to the local hobby shop and get the polymer beads they use for stuffing. I don't know what they're called... they stuff hackey sacks with them. Get the smaller ones. Much better than sand since it doesn't absorb moisture and has a better feel than airsoft BBs.

Use HEAVY SAND

in your front and rear bags if you do any sort of bench shooting. There is NO replacement for sand in rest bags. Silica sand works pretty well. I got mine from a Cement plant by the bag.

Okay if it is something that must be light I would use some sort of beads from a hobby store.

The other thing to remember is that you DO NOT WANT a sticky bag where the gun does not slide freely in the bags under recoil. It must slide freely. Use powdered Carunuba wax on the bags, baby powder if it is not wet and humid out or silicone spray on the bags.

I see to often rests where people basically try and bolt the gun in thinking it is solid and will not move, WRONG.
