I am looking to buy a shooting jacket for the winter like a Pavillion or something similar ?? ( Any ideas ??) Where should I be looking. The best so far I think would be NICA shooting would it not ???

I bought a Pavillion winter shooting coat and am not impressed. It's warm enough but I haven't found the coat very durable. After one winter I found a couple of tears in the fairly thin outside material. For the quality of the garment I thought it was over priced.

I also have a lighter Browning coat that I've had for a few years and prefer it. On the very coldest days I can layer underneath and it's better than the Pavillion IMO. The only trouble is that I don't see my coat on the current Browning website. The closest one to mine is their Pre-Vent Insulated Shooting Jacket. Bob Allan/Boyt has an extensive line of winter clothes. If I couldn't find what I liked from Browning I'd look at them.

As for where to buy them I can't give any advice on retail outlets. For mail order, if you dont' mind getting whacked with the Canadian duty on clothes Cabelas usually has a good selection.

If you're willing to take a chance on ordering something without first trying it on Irv's Shooting Supplies in Oshawa On has Bob Allen cold weather jackets in stock. He's very good at packaging stuff up and sending it out. Haven't seen his prices lately and don't know what sort of return policy he has...you'd have to discuss that with him. His number is 1-888-579 3056 if you want to talk to him.

Cabelas has some nice stuff and they ship to Canada.
Insist on USPS not UPS, the UPS brokerage fees are a killer.
Cabelas has always shipped USPS and have their own broker on this side of the border. The fees are quite reasonable. They also have a very good return policy if something doesn't fit.

Speaking of fit most of the shooting jackets I've tried are a little smaller than standard sizes. It doesn't hurt to order them one size larger.

Thinking about winter shooting jackets if I had to do it over again I'd probably buy top quality winter clothes that would be cheaper than most shooting specific jackets and wear an oversized shooting vest over the lot.

Well Cabelas doesn't seem to have what I am looking for. I was leaning towards the pavillion because then I can wear fleece under it if it is really cold and it will also work by itself on cool fall/spring days. The one I saw recently looked good.

But size, I am only 5'8" 160lbs but I was thinking about a large ?? What size do you have claybuster ??

Several of the shooters that have been around for a few years, and have experienced the joy of cold/wet shooting at the club, seem to lean towards the "Storm" line of shooting jackets. I suspect they may be a bit pricey?

I wear a "Joe Rocket" ATV jacket, which is waterproof, and warm. It has large enough pockets to hold a box of shells, and can be adjusted in several areas to allow for a good fit when shooting. The arms are a tad longer then regular jackets so that the cuffs dont expose your wrists, when the gun is raised. I used to see these on e-bay regularly awhile back, for very good prices. Some motorcycle shops may carry them, as that is where I got mine.
It also works great for riding a bike or ATV, as could be expected.:p

At least a Large. I'm 6' 1" and 215 and wear a 2XL Pavillion Winter Coat.. The XL was too constricting and there's enough room to put a vest or sweater on underneath. I have a Pavillion rain jacket in XL and it fits but is a little snug.

I think the large will be best too looking at the sizing charts. I was reading that Pavillion has made some recent improvments to their jackets so I hope they are good now. I will let you know what I end up with this week.

I just bought a Pavillion Storm jacket for $130 Canadian, shipped to my door off e-bay. That was a good tip m12man thanks. It probably saved me around $60.

I just got the jacket a couple of days ago and I am totally impressed. It appears well made with expandable pockets for shell, a liner around the wrists, vented back, inside pocket and heavy duty zippers. Total to my door was $130 Can. The jacket had a MSRP of $169.00 American. Deal.....I think so.:D :dancingbanana:

If you are a trap or skeet shooter then you should go with the Storm Jackets which have the option of a fleece inner liner. They are expensive though. Ron Lee in Winfield can get them for you, but I think he's in Phoenix for the winter. Browning and Beretta both make some good cold weather/Gore Tex coats too. Sierra Trading post sometimes has some great buys on coats from these two manufacturers and they ship to Canada as well.

I use a Storm Jacket for the spring and early fall, but switch to the $99 Cabelas jacket in the winter. For the money, the Cabelas jacket can't be beat in my opinion.

The latest ones I've seen did look better made than the one I own.

That's a great price too because the local dealers in my area are selling them in the $150 range plus taxes.

I know Ron Lee as well Brian as he is a member of our club and yes he is down south . He is selling his jackets for $225. I also looked at the Cabelas jacket. A lot of guys have bought the Storm jackets from Ron and the biggest complaint is that they do not breath and are expensive. In all reallity the differences between the storm and the pavillion are minimal. However, the pavillion has an open flap mesh back allowing it to breath.

Now by the sounds of it you and I may have met at sometime ?? Do you shoot PITA or are you a member of the Kelowna club ?? Send me a PM if you want.
