Amen, that shotty pictured looks way too cluttered. All you need for a defensive shotgun is a good light and maybe a side saddle (Im not a big fan of the side saddle because to me it makes the gun feel unbalanced). Keep a full length stock if you want any controllability with more than light trap loads.

As far as legal requirements go:
The barrel must be 18-1/2" or longer
The overall fireable length must be 26" or more
If it's a semi-automatic, the magazine must be limited to hold no more than five of the largest rounds it is designed to fire.

P.S. I also lean towards (ok, own) a Remington 870. If you really want to accesorize, then it's the way to go. With that said, Mossberg 500 acessories are pretty easy to find. ATI is a good place to start.

Thanks guys. Districorp seems to have everything I need and looks like it is easy to place an order.
I still haven't bought the gun, (gonna order it this week) so I will check out the 870 before I go with the Mossberg. Sounds like it is a bit more expensive though.

Have you considered a FABARM? Those are pretty cool. I personally have a FABARM Martial 14" bbl with a full pistolgrip stock. It comes with Hi-Viz sights. New for $749 from TSE (one of our dealers). I'm not sure if you can mount a light on it, but as for a sling I chose a Blue Force Gear Anaconda Sling from One Shot Tactical (also another of our dealers).

Believe it or not, the firearms laws are, well, flawed a bit and sometimes contradict themselves, nevermind common sense. You found one of those flaws.....
Ok, if the shotgun is supplied with an 18" or 14" barrel from the factory and registered like that, they are non-restricted. Another thread discusses the option of adding these short, factory supplied barrels to Remington 870s and reregistering them so they are still non-restricted.
But... to every rule, there's an exception and to every exception, a rule. In this case it means that if you cut-down your unwieldy 32" Wingmaster barrel to a much handier 18", you now have a prohibited device.
As far as my ATI comment earlier, I should have said that it is one source that certainly makes Mossberg 500 accessories. But as far as ATI parts go, you get what you pay for.

Again, let me push the Remington 870. Everybody and his dog makes parts for the 870. Modular? You bet! You can buy one gun and change barrels, sights and stocks. In a matter of minutes, you can go from trap to skeet to room-clearing. Also, you can find repair parts easily, not that you'll need to. For $400 you can get a sweet 870 Express with a two-shot extension and black synthetic stocks.
