Can anyone give me a name or phone number for anywhere near Ottawa that I can buy or order tempilaq? I've looked quite a bit online and can't find anything.

I think it's a paint on temp indicator?

Not required, in my opinion.

Your best bet is to try welding supply stores. If you have an Acklands Grainger they will also carry it.
Yes it is a temperature indicator.

I tried several welding supply shops and industrial supply shops from Barrie to North Bay . . . most were not able to get it at all, or not in the temp I wanted. I ended up ordering it from Brownell's (in the US). I got the brush on type, but I found that it did not work for me. Instead of melting, it just seemed to turn black. I could never tell when I hit the right temp.

Exactly. If your local welding shop can not get them they are not much of a welding shop/supplier.

Temp-Sensitive Markers for Annealers Tempil sells both temp sticks and brush-on temp-sensitive laquer. The crayon-like TempilStik leaves a coating on the neck that melts at the point of contact once the surface reaches the product's rated temperature. Tempil temp-sticks work well and are available in most plumbing supply stores. Liquid Tempilaq dries to dull, opaque film once applied. When you heat the necks, and the rated temperature is reached, the film liquefies. Tempilaq works, but we favor the temp sticks--application is faster and less messy, and the change at target temp seems easier to see. A 650°-rated marker is good for starters, but you may need to go higher or lower to get the best results.

Not sure of the brand,but saw something similar in Princess Auto in the welding stuff.

Thanks folks, exactly what I was looking for.

Went to princess auto, they had it, but only up to 400f, so no help there. The guy seemed confused that I would be working with temperatures that hot. I was hesititant to explain the purpose, but when he asked, and I told him, he gave me the hairy eyeball.

I called linde/BOCGas, they had no clue what I was talkinga bout.

Praxair came to the rescue. They don't sell alot of it, and as such don't stock it, but they have ordered it and I'll have it by the end of next week.

Acklands will be my next stop just to cost compare...

I went with Omega supplies as well - I believe that I had them send me a 400F for the base and 650F for the top (as I was experimenting a bit).
