Hi All,
I recently purchased a 338 Lapua and am keen to get it out and put it to the test on some long range shooting. I live in the Calgary area, and was wondering if anyone knows of an area where I could test out the rifle's (and my own) capabilities. I don't mind driving anywhere within an hour of Calgary.

Thanks in advance for advice.

Best,
Mike

You could head out to crown land anywhere west of town or ask some farmers for permission that have land suitable for shooting with terrain features like valleys or coulees.

Drive NW from Calgary for 1.25 hrs. You are likely now on crown land. If yes and safe to do so, shoot. If you want to go a little further, I'll give you the GPS coordinates to my super secret spot:11 U 618186.25 m E 5706666.15 m N

I think your best bet would be the longest mile in Edson. If I lived within 3 hours of that range, I'd be a life member.

Edson is clearly NOT your best bet!

You live in the lower mainland where shooting spots are scarce, there are thousands of spots between here and Edson where a guy could shoot. Not to mention 4+ hours driving each way? Really? No thanks.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I'll make a couple trips outside of the city to the areas you suggested and see what I can find. Cheers!

Have you been to the Edson range ? ,,,, I say it's worth the drive also ... surrounded by crown land so one could camp the night to split up the drive

The Northstar Range in Nokomis SK is operated by the Saskatchewan Provincial Rifle Association. There are measured firing points to 1200 yds, three targets with markers' gallery, and a lot of experienced long range shooters in the club. Research F-class matches in Western Canada and you'll be off and away!

I think 338 is not allowed in F-class...

The only thing I can say, because I've said it before, is not that you can't shoot on crown land, but if you decide to do it, be absolutely sure it's safe in the area you choose.

You can't just look down range 200, 300, 500, 1000Y and say, yup, that' safe. These areas are VERY busy close to Calgary, because of just that. It's proximity to OHV, hiking, and camping lands.

I GAURENTEE, most spots you see that are 300+ have trails within your shooting direction. I know this beacuse I'm well informed of the trail systems as an avid offroad rider. People still ride closed trails, and ever increasing are hikers who now hike closed motorcycle trails. There are some webpages advertising these trails because people ask us for the directions to them. An OHV rider CANNOT hear gunshots while riding. That's been argued on here before. I've found myself looking downrange at people shooting in our direction... it's not fun.

Driving 2-2.5 hours from calgary helps tremendously to get away from the congestion. Anything less is sure to have plenty of people in and around the trails and area.

It's allowed, but muzzle brakes are not. It's a rare person willing to shoot @50-60 rounds of 338 per day without a muzzle brake.

Strongly agree with the rest of your comments as well - but it's not just recreational use to consider ... there are also personnel employed in the energy, forestry and agricultural industries working in forested areas.

The SPRA allows 338s in FClass, unbreaked. After the Aug match Saturday, guys can screw on the brakes if they want and have at it again.

This year, most regulars will most likely be in Ottawa for the World's. With some effort getting everyone behind the firing point, you can go 1640 yds from the fence line or cattle gate.

We have 7 targets now and paid pullers with plans for 9 (6 sliders and 3 of the original cantilever type).

A close friend shot with us out there testing his 338 SDM (think 338 edge on a 8mm rem mag case) custom hunting rifle for a few years. After 5 rounds he'd have to crawl back up to the line from the recoil pushing him back each shoot.

Check us out at www.saskrifle.com and on facebook at www.facebook.com/saskrifle and come on out and shoot some longs with us!

hit waiparous just behind it thete is like 200km on forest , i go there everyweek and it takes me 40min from nw calgary, take a1 until u reach gas plant then turn right, its like 10 min after cochrane

.338 is over 8mm, therefore not allowed.

My bad - I was going by Saskatchewan experience, without doing the calculation (.338"=8.58mm). However ... this restriction varies by location:

(5) F-Class Competition Rifles
(a) F-Class “Open” (O) Rifles
(i) Any rifle of up to 8mm calibre may be used ... NOTE: This maximum calibre limit of 8mm applies only to Connaught Range and Primary Training Centre; calibre limits for events held
at other venues may differ, so must be determined and promulgated in advance by the organizers of those events.

I go up to a old pit mine In Windermere BC and can shoot up to 1700yds
