I've started an AR build and have a complete lower. I'm now looking for an upper, either with or without a barrel. Where can I source a new one in 7.62x39? I know NEA makes one, but I've heard far too much bad things from multiple sources about them to buy theirs. Anyone know anywhere else who makes/sells them?

NEA has their crap straightened out now... They rushed their first batch and screwed their reputation, but they stood behind their product and made it right. I wouldn't fear buying their newer stuff.

I have many ARs, including a Windham in x39. If you're going to shoot milsurp ammo you'll want a heavy hammer spring and should consider an enhanced x39 firing pin (slightly longer). Those two tweaks and you'll reliably fire those hard Commie primers!

Im not gonna try and sell you on NEA, you are a grown man and can do what you want. Just take the bad and the good with a grain of salt, a lot of people got burned by NEA and their "integrity" (or lack thereof) on here. I for one looked past all the bull#### and am happy with what I got. YMMV.

The folks at True North Arms dot com chipped in a 7.62x39 upper in Liberal Party red for our man Ottawa to use in his range days with Parliament Hill staffers and media. I think we should show them some love when choosing products.

If I'm not mistaken the discussed brands all use a modified/weakened AR15 bolt. Seems that's a weak point.
From what I know, Faxon ARAK21 and CMMG MK47 are the ones who engineered for that caliber from the begining.

LMT made a "lobster" bolt that was supposed to be stronger and better. But with a traditional barrel/barrel extension you can't have a larger bolt. Hence the special redesign of Faxon and CMMG.
