I'm looking for a place to buy some lapping compound. I only need like 1 tsp to touch up a barrel crown. do i have to order it or can a pick it up at a local machine shop or hardware store?

automotive stores should have fine and course valve lapping compound. Clover brand used to be in a double ended tub with course at one end and fine on the other. For a very fine abrasive, Simonize with red jeweller's rouge.

Lapping a crown...? I thought that method stopped being used 50 or 60 years ago...

Seriously, have it properly machined.

so how do you finish off a crown once it's been re-cut??

just cut and let er rip?

I'm just trying to smooth out some small blemishes. if it works great if not. off to a gun smith.

"...small blemishes..." How small and are there any cuts/dings in the metal? If you cut the muzzle, it needs to be re-crowned. Brownell's sells the tool.
Fine tool marks can be buffed out with a cloth wheel and jeweller's rouge.

so canadian tire has lapping compound 120 or 240 grit and non of the auotparts stores knows the grit of their valve grinding compound. i guess i'll go and raid a machine shop.

After machining it as smooth as you can I finish the crown with a 60 degree removable piloted reamer. It leaves a burr free smooth finish.
