Where to find, or borrow, a go / no go gauge for 7x57? and PTG rant thread

On reamers specifically? Not enough clearance, out of spec
bushings - not to size, inside and outside not concentric with each other
Bottom metal, completely out of dimensional spec
Recoil lug issues aswell

And their customer support is pretty much non existent after they have your money. Ive had them tell me multiple times that I will be getting a refund but it never comes. Other stuff they will simply tell you it’s not their problem.

I order ptg only when I have no other options, and even then it hurts. Don’t get me wrong, they certainly have the capabilities to make good stuff, but the issues just outweigh the positives for me.

Manson is my usual go to now, fewer issues, and if you do have a problem they go out of their way to make it right.

I had great reamers from PTG for a few years... then myself and several customers had nothing but problems for a few years... quality control was gone... the grind of the reamers did not have enough relief cut on the flutes... as the chamber was being reamed it reached a point where it stopped cutting and the roundness of the reamer would jam in the chamber... often it had to be driven out, you could not turn it and pull it out. To complete the chambering you had to polish the rear of the chamber larger so you could continue with the reamer until it bound up tight again... repeat several times before you arrive at the correct head space... took a long painful time. Those reamers had too be sent back to correct the 'sharpness'. PTG did that under warranty but you ate the freight back... and after experiencing this problem a dozen different times one tends to look elsewhere... just last week a customer showed up with a PTG reamer he bought off ebay... it looked new... and low and behold there was a reason it was on ebay... another bad grind and an extra hour to complete the chambering with the reamer jamming tight for the last inch...

JGS and Manson are my top choices... Clymer would be 3rd...

Hope you found your gauges ok. PTG has out grown there quality control .Pretty sure Dennis (guntec) has purchased and used more reamers than most people can count .I have had issues with ptg reamers being over sized and chattering issues.I am a Manson man,but I only have 85 or so reamers last count.

Strange to hear all of these negative reports about PTG... I must be extremely lucky to have had no issues with this many orders placed.

It isn't strange at all, and has been going on for years... Luck doesn't have much to do with it, as opposed to volume and specific items ordered.
Manson has had zero issues with the products he produces, offers exceptional customer service, and is even occasionally available for a chat on the phone.
PTG...not so much.

Yeah, it is strange... two dozen orders, no problems... and I have talked to Dave Kiff on the phone many times... he went out of the way with follow up calls to get my 7.62X57 Medium Mauser reamer just right... we just talked again a couple weeks ago to spec out my .358/375 reamer throat. Never a problem... so yeah... I must be lucky... I have ordered three Manson reamers and one had a buggered throat... they were good to fix it asap, so I had no beef... but their short chamber policy to check the throat does seem like a CS loophole.

I am not trying to get in a pissing war here... I would happily recommend Manson, but I also happily recommend PTG based on my experiences with them.

I have bought a dozen or so PT&G reamers, all custom grinds. One had to go back, overall I like dealing with them for wildcats not in the catalogue. I’ve never bought a production reamer, can’t comment on those I always sent my own sheet to them and all but one arrived on spec and in good working order. I just ordered my .375 Kemano reamer from them for which I provided the specs, hopefully it works out.

I bought catalogued reamers in .22 KH, .260 Rem, 6.5 Rem Mag and .358 Win with no issues. All the others were built to my specs, again with no issues... I suspect your Kemano reamer will be just fine.

When I was speaking with IBI last year about a custom barrel, they said they're more than happy to use customer reamers and return them after cutting. They also told me they ask customers not to send them PTG reamers due to having so many issues with them.

I’m not doubting at all but have had good experiences with PTG, I just used both a .25 Gibbs and a 9.5x57 reamer of mine from them and both ran flawlessly. Then I had this reamer made to combine the two, I’ll be using it on a couple barrels in 2020 and don’t expect any drama. There was an era of issues as I understand it but it sure seems like my era has come after it, unless I just keep getting unreasonably lucky with PTG. Overall I deal with them as they’re the easiest my end with odd custom orders, and they’re local.

I too have had good luck with ordering PT&G reamers.

My experience too in a dozen of them, the one I sent back needed a throating adjustment but otherwise cut fine. Don’t doubt any of the posters here with bad experiences as I know better from who they are and what they do. I’ve just had very good luck with them to date.

Received gauges today from PT&G. Well packed and they look very nicely made/machined. Will check headspacing on another day.

You can't complain about that service... that was pretty quick receipt from West Coast USA. My .358/375 reamer will be awhile as I had them do one with a custom throat to my specs.
