Hi all,

I'm planning on building a long range rifle in 308. My first choice was a 338LM but with 2 young kids, I could not justify the cost of ammo to the boss (wife) :D.

I'm looking for a Rem 700 SA action. It can be anything from a LTR, Police, 5R or tactical...... VLS?

Is the 5R really better?

Do you know where I could get one or do you know somebody how can help me with that?

Cheers to all,

Phil

If you plan on going full out custom then get an SPS. Send it to a gunsmith and he can peel all the factory junk off it. If you want a factory rifle with the factory barrel and trigger, well then get one that suits your fancy, cause they all shoot the same. The SPS, VTR, Police, 5R all shoot the same. Some might shoot better than others, and then you might get a Friday afternoon special.

The actions are all identical, some are just finished nicer than others.

5R is the type of rifling not the action. As said before a Rem 700 SA or LA is a Rem 700 SA or LA aside from having different bolt face and extractor. You will see some advertised as BDL, CDL and so on. This basically means how they finished the action, such as jewelling the bolt along with other things.

Finding just an action might be tough. Most guys including myself do the same thing as you are trying to do so all the actions are spoken for. You might have to check the EE often to find a cheap gun to use as a donor action. If you are looking to build a 308 win any short action with a standard bolt face will do. Calibres such as 22-250, 243, 7mm-08 and such will work. You don’t want a Winchester shortmag or Remington short action ultramag calibre because they use the magnum bolt face. If you are not stuck on a 308 the 6.5-284 is also very popular. In this case some guys are using a long action standard bolt face from any of the 30-06 type calibers so they can mag feed the really long seated bullets.

Once guys like obtuned, and mysticplayer show up in this thread they will be able to get you on the right track for the kind of build you are looking for.

I know a lot a fellows have bought a new Rem sps model sold barrel there are dealers here who sell Krieger,tru-flyte etc and other brand barrels & stocks,
I would send action to Denis Sorrenson have him do his majic truing action and instale barrel of your choice and then find a good stock that you like Denis could do all the work for you. I am sure other members will tell you of other smiths that could do work as well,
Also keep eye on EE boards for a used 700

Ferris, The 5R is a nice package as it sits. It is a standard Remington action, but with a nicer cosmetic finish than the SPS (though mechanically identical) and it is in stainless.

The barrels on these are generally fairly accurate for getting you out of the gate, and the stock is one of the nicest available on a Remington Factory rifle.

I'd suggest just grabbing one of these used (there are many for sale on the EE) and just shooting it. The work well with good factory ammo. Unless you re-load your own ammo, going full-on custom isn't necessary.

The rifle is for want of only a new custom barrel when you want to take the next leap into long range precision. Krieger produces barrels with real 5R rifling and are a great choice if upgrading later. Also, Canadian gun builder Mick McPhee makes custom 30 cal barrels. "Machinist" just had his Remington 700 5R upgraded with one of Mick's barrels and it is a one-hole gun.

The great thing with these rifles is they are excellent for incrementally upgrading and the componenets are strong and safe.
