Hello.

I'm always thinking about what's next with this stuff and I have a stainless savage long action in the safe with a 18" heavy .308 barrel on it at the moment. I've always kinda wanted a .35 Whelen, so it's a good candidate for the swap. Where could I find one in Canada? Preferable if it's not more expensive that just finding a .35 Whelen rifle. I have a Savage nut friend who swaps his own barrels who offered to help with that part. He shoots F-class TR I think.

Also, would it be possible to bore out and re-rifle this one. Maybe turn it down a contour or two for weight?

Thanks, I'll keep looking.

Bob Jury over here in Alberta will build you a Savage pre fit barrel in 35. From what I hear, he has a pretty fast turnaround time as well. Hearing plenty of good things about his barrels.

Thanks everyone, I have a .223, a .243, a 6.5x55, a .308, a 30/06 and a 45/70 not counting the milsurps. I think I can trade the .308 into a 35 Whelen to balance things out a little. It's that or some metric 9.3mm round, but I think I can have fun with the .35. I also have a Dan Wesson model 15 in .357, so I have tons of projectiles and molds etc.

I built a stainless savage 35 remington bolt action as well as a blue/black 358 winchester on yet another savage, there are only 2 barrel twsits to pick from at shillen, go with the faster of the 2, I believe it is a 12 twist. Also shillen only makes a heavy varmint profile barrel in the .35 cal barrels, it sounds heavy but a 20 inch barrel balances ever so good, accuracy with cast bullets exceeded my expectations in both rifles

Call Jerry at Mystic precision. He can hook you up

Prices start at just over $400 if Im not mistaken.

Whats a Bob Jury barrel worth??

OP, if I was you, I would go with a 338-06 over a 35 whelen. For whatever reason, the 338 seems to be the perfect size for the 30-06 case, and you get better ballistics with the 338 vs a 35 cal bullet of the same weight. Of course, within 200 yards the differences are so tiny....

I know you're on the west coast but JC Custom Barrels located here in NB has started to make in roads with BR shooters here and I see they have just added .35 cal and prefit savage barrels, may be worth looking into. Their turn around time has been exceptional from contacting to order being completed.

$440 for a prefit savage I believe. I'll probably go 35 calibre because I'm into casting and I like heavy and slow. I have other guns that are fast :)
