Looking to get a Barrel to fiot my large ring mauser 98K in 22-250.... anyone know where i can get one in canada?

also: anyoner know of a good smith who can do work on my action if i ship it to them? Local smith wants 100$ just to drill and tap for scope bases... i didnt think that was fair, unless you folks think it is , then i will stick with local.

Fixing up a 98 for sporting puposes is very expensive and when your done all you have a "fixed up 98".

IMHO .... you would be farther ahead to just buy a used 22/250 or .223 on the EE or a new Rem SPS or Savage.

$100 for D+T plus the cost of a rebarell, maybe stocking on top of that. You are well on the way or more to the cost of a factory rifle.

.

SEE! I called yesterday and he said 100 all said and done....looking at the scope base i have... there are 2 holes/

If you have a one piece scope base and there are only two holes, I don't think you have the correct base.

There is more to do than just drilling and tapping some holes. They need to be located correctly and inline with the bore. Depending on the action some alteration may be required on the rear bridge or the rear base.

If the job is done correctly $100 is not out of line.

100 bucks is a little steep in my opinion. Half hour of work for 100 bucks? We charge 60/hr for labour and machine some pretty craz sh*t

Fixing up a Mauser

I wouldn't butcher a nice 98 to make a sporter out of it unless there is one with a shot out barrel. I would convert a P14 or P17 to handle big bore rounds. Like some of the other members said it isn't worth it to have one built when there plenty of used commercial guns around.

I was talking to a friend this morning that has a FN commercial Mauser in 300 H&H that is engraved and in beautiful condition. He wants something like $800 or $900 for it. You couldn't build one out of a surplus Mauser for that. Who ever buys it will get their money out of it when it is re-sold.

SHEEESH.....The guy just wanted to know if $100.00 was out of line for a D&P:rolleyes:

I charge $11.00 a hole I use a Forster jig to do the job right
you would have a minimum of 3 holes depending on the mount you have
you will pay more for a side mount
and if the receiver bridge charger lips need to be removed you pay more and if the bolt needs to be bent to clear a scope you pay even more:)

Have fun Its a good project :D
