I just ran out of my South African 7.62 nato ball....does anyone know who has the best price on it right now? I also have been hearing rumors that Canada Ammo is going to be getting some 7.62 nato in april, does anyone know what the price and manufacture of that is going to be?

I got my SA ammo from bashaw sports. They ship to you. Cost me around 400$ for 1260rnds. Shoots like crap out of my rifle mind you. Its 146gr ball and have no idea how old, guessing very old.

I purchased 1000 plated flat point .308 bullets from canadian BDX, but haven't yet had a chance to load them up. They only ran around $98 for 1000, and looked good to my rookie reloading eye.

Me too..... I'm looking at $350 just for the bullets (1000 bulk remington).

Rob

The following taken from Russell's 2008 catalogue:

Bullets:
Hornady 150gr. FMJ BT - $24.99 (per 100) = $262.40 after tax per 1000
Nosler custom competition J4 155gr. HPBT - $69.99 (per 250) = $293.96 after tax per 1000

Primers:
Winchester Large Rifle Primer (per 1000) = $32.54 after tax

Powder:
Hodgdon H4895 in 8lb can = $209.99 after tax
(asuming a load of 41.5 grains per load equals ~6lbs of powder - $157.50 after tax per 1000.

Brass:
Assume you use recycled or once fired, and you load them more than once...you should be able to reduce the cost of brass to what? say $50 per 1000.

Totals using Nosler J4s:

$293.96
$ 32.54
$157.50
$ 50.00 for a grand total of: $534.00

If these guys can get people to buy surplus ammo for over that, then good on them!

Don't forget the cost of the reloading equipment.
.........Time........that's the big one...
In the end...if you shot 10's of thousands of rounds... you would save money.

CANADIAN BDX BULLETS 100$ PER THOUSAND

SURPLUS POWDER HIGGISON POWDER 81.20 PER THOUSAND

Primers 30$ per thousand shipped from don lawson gunshop fredericton

grand total 212 per thousand.

I actually cast my bullets so I just pay for the gas check. About 30 bucks per thousand. This is plinking ammo. Accuracy is on par with the portugese surplus stuff. Bullets are moving at 2200 fps rather than 2700 but still quite capable of piercing a piece of paper.

Now for much more accurate stuff I use sierra palma match 155 grain bullets 400$ per thousand Varget powder about 150 per thousand. Benchrest primers which are 40 per thousand. So extremely good quality ammo is about 600 per thousand.

Apples to apples. Cheap bullets cheap powder vs surplus ammo which is made of cheap bullets and cheap powder.

In my target rifle the portugese surplus 7.62 nato shoot 1.5 minute of angle which is not bad for surplus ammo this is fot 81 year. I've shot a case of the 79 and it seems to be about the same. (This was when I was buying for 320 a case delivered). Don Lawson again he would pick up in montreal from districorp and drop it off on his way home.)

My handload shoots .3 moa and the cast shoot 1 moa.

I do not factor in the oddles of time experimenting and casting and loading because that is a hobby in of its self. Some people knit.

Since this what put in the battle rifle forum you can shoot cast out of an M1A.

Hmmmm! IMHO Varget is fine bolt gun powder but not in a M1A/M14 rifle. The pressures are a bit low and it hurt the rifle.

Reloading equipment is not that expensive, and reloading is not that time consuming....You will pay for the loading equipment within a couple of thousand rounds.

Back to the question at hand: You can check Things Military in Calgary as well, but I think he is charging $600 or $650 for a case of 1260 rounds.
