Does anybody out there know where you can pick up an SVT 40 for a decent price? My PAL should be coming in the mail one of these days and i've been wanting to get one of these for a while. Am currently going to gunsmithing school in PA and svt 40's are damn expensive in the states, can't exactly go browsing stores in Canada right now...will be going home in a month (GTA), if anybody knows of any in that area or anywebsite's/stores that can buy from.

Max at World Guns said it best:

The SVT-40 had a somewhat controversial reputation. It was highly regarded by the enemies (Finns and Germans) and it was a very sought-after war trophy, re-issued to both German and Finnish troops. On the other hand, it was often considered unreliable and over-complicated by the Soviet troops (when comparing with old Mosin-Nagant rifles), but it was more to the poor training and maintenance, than to the rifle itself.

On the Tradeex site, click on their products tab and then choose military rifles. The SVT40 for $429 will be the first rifle on the page. IIRC, the $329 price was a special on rifles with small cracks in the stock, though at least one member of the site reported getting one without any cracks that he could find.

About a week or two ago I noticed that the $329 special that was listed on their main page was no longer there, so they probably sold all of them.

If you live in the GTA and order a rifle from them, the shipping to Toronto is usually pretty quick (about two days shipping after the CFC approves the transfer). I got an SVT40 at the regular price and was happy with mine.

Thanks for the quote, 'Tater.

How much is 7.62x54r going for these days (what with the economic crisis and the AWB scare down south...)?

Weren't they notoriously unreliable?

I have 2 & wouldn't call them unreliable. Because of the rimmed case on the 7.62x54 round, I find I have to carefully stack them in the mag so each successive round doesn't catch on the one below in the magazine. Other than that I haven't had any issues with mine. YMMV :D
