Where to get reliable SxS?

My brother wants to buy a SxS for his first shotgun. It is for general duty, like fowling, hunting, and skeet shooting. He needs something simple, rugged, and reliable, that will work every single time.

I know there are a lot of used SxS shotguns, but we don't have a way of gauging their quality. What is new out there that we can get? TOZ? How's that Norinco Coach? It would be a "workman's" shotgun that he is looking for.

X2 Ahsan. Baikals are solidly built, reasonably regulated, and reliable. They're about the lowest priced, solidly built SXS commonly available in Canada. You get very plain wood, but what can you expect for the money. When they're new or anything other than well broken in, they tend to be very tight, but they slick up over time (or you can polish 'em up yourself, if you don't want to wait). Current market value varies with condition and model, but expect between $150 and $550 (with select few presentation grade models selling for $1000+).

There's a multitude of mid-range domestic SxS's that I'd advise staying away from altogether - makes such as Savage, Winchester, Remington. I'm not saying there are no such models that are worth paying for (I'd give my left cheek for a Winchester Model 21, for example), but you need to know what you're looking for. It's not a good place for a newbie.

If at all possible, try to get a double-trigger, straight (English) stock configuration. Make sure your brother tries shouldering enough different guns (doesn't matter what models) to be able to know what length of pull fits him best (LOP measures from trigger to buttstock).

If he gets a reasonably reliable SXS for his first gun and it fits him, he'll be out shopping for expensive models long before he can actually afford them (darn things are addictive). ;)

Why not try and find someone near you that IS knowledgeable about double guns. I think from what you've described, that there is available a lot of very good used SxS's out there - that would "fit your requirements" quite well.

Have you looked in the EE ??? Posted a WTB ??? Visited a few reputable gunshops to see what they might have in stock - or talked to a gunsmith or fellow gunnutz to determine what constitutes or how to judge "good" (or better) condition ?

I'd much sooner rely on something like a good used Italian, Spanish or German -made double than a brand new "anything", dollar for dollar, coming out of Russia, Turkey, South America or China.

Laurona SxS are nice quality shotguns. Made in Spain. You can sometimes find them in vg+ condition for $300.

They handle nicely, and far better fit & finish than the new cheapo stuff (CZ, Stoeger, Norinco, etc...)

+1 on that.
I had a Laurona SxS some time ago. Shot nice with it :)

Check out Tradex for some good used ones at very reasonable prices. I have one of their FEG Monte Carlos and am very happy with it.

The OP clearly stated he didn't want used.

You get today's attaboy for dredging up a 4 year old thread, though.

They all make them relatively reliable these days. If you want to go cheap, go Laurona. Nice Spanish firearms maker, still in good standing.
Had some for upland hunting and loved it! The only thing was the automatic safety that I detest greatly.

I doubt the fellow is still looking. As pointed out, this thread is 4 years old.
