Anyone have a source for suncorite in Canada? It's also sold in the USA as "British Black".

I need a source in Canada. It's not just semi-gloss black paint, it's more of an epoxy.

Any help appreciated!

Could you just do a mail order from the U.S.? Or do they not ship to Canada?

Just out of curiousity, what kind of project is this for? Got an old Lee worth restoring?

True, but not as authentic.

Tyler - you can't ship aerosols out of the US without mega-permits and expensive courier services.

I don't know if it's any easier to get the stuff out of the UK but I believe it's sold by a company called Trimrite, who also make powder coating products. Maybe a powder coater could point you in the right direction.

Brownells sells a variety of coating products, but I couldn't find Suncorite. Most of the products they sell are in aerosols, so purchase is a problem.

ok, well I've determined that the product I need is "Suncorite #528 RFU" as manufactured by Henkel Surface Products in Germany and distributed in the UK by Charles Tennant Inc., Trimite UK, and Stowlin Croftshaw UK.

I have calls in to all three, but no dice yet. Trimite USA does NOT carry the UK Suncorite line - only their powder coating products.

This just in from Trimite UK:

Dear Claven2,

We can supply Suncorite 528 from the UK, we are not aware of a US or Canadian source, and I am pleased to quote for our minimum packsize of 5 litre containers:

Suncorite 528 (Product ref. MP0417)
Supplied in 1 x 5 litre containers @ UKÂŁ19.00 per litre [ok so far...]

The above price is Ex-Works and includes export packing and documentation. We would also be pleased to provide airfreight to Ottawa international airport @ UKÂŁ250.00. [and here's the deal breaker!!!]

I hope our product will remain of interest, should you require further clarification or technical advice, please contact me.

Regards

I also heard back from Henkel (the manufacturer) - they only sell in 25L quantity. Here's their response:
Dear Claven2,

We would only be able to supply a 25ltr container of this product plus we would have to find out for you what the carraige charge would be to canada, I think you would be looking at over ÂŁ350.00 just for the carraige

The product is supplied by Henkel Ltd maybe there customer services could help you stcustomer.services@uk.henkel.com <mailto:stcustomer.services@uk.henkel.com>

regards

The latest:
Claven2,

The only other option would be to send by seafreight which would cost UKÂŁ125.00 but would obviously take some time.

Regards

Well, that's half the air freight rate, but at $249.81 using today's exchange JUST FOR THE SHIPPING - I'm a bit at a loss for words.

Maybe I should contact the mods about a group buy. 5L is WAY more than I need. 250ml would be more than sufficient!

I also found out the crap they sell in the US as "british black" isn't real suncorite - it's just acrylic black paint.

Would there be a market for this stuff at $20 plus shipping for a 250ml quantity? That's what I'd have to charge to break even. Assuming I could get reasonable and unbreakable packaging to mail to buyers...

by the way, "british black" only duplicates the look of suncorite, NOT the durability. Its just an ordinary aerosol spray paint, though it is good for "touching up" scratches in the original finish.

You might want to ask them for the MSDS for Suncorite, the original version was not a spray in your garage coating and may require the use of supplied breathing air while spraying.

I have the MSDS.

Suncorite is available in THREE formulas for semi-gloss black.

They are:
Suncorite Aqua Black 100RFU
Suncorite 528RFU
Suncorite 215RFU

I'm not sure which one the brits originally used, although I now *think* it may have been the 215RFU formulation. As near as I can tell they all go on the same and have similar properties though, so it may be academic.

Henkel describes them all as "self-phosphating resins". The main difference is 215 is formulated to apply to small steel parts, 528 is tweaked for automotive parts applications to resist salt spray on snowy roads and 100RFU is designed with a water base so it can be applied very thinly to temperature-sensitive parts.

Also, it's about a 50/50 split as to whether the brit armorer in question sprayed or brushed it on. I personally do NOT plan to spray. Suncorite is a carcinogen in aerosol form.

Now to get some...

Oddly enough, Henkel told me it was INVENTED IN CANADA. Apparently the original trade mark is still owned by someone here that blocks its import for commercial resale, hence why we have none in Canada. Henkel doesn;t market it in the states b/c they manufacture Autophoretic 866 there and it's a competing product.

Sometimes things just are not easy *sigh*

A totally unrelated response here but....I've imitated suncorite on a No4 by painting a sight protector with flat black kryon, let it dry and dipping it in BLO and let that dry. Looks like suncorite. Not as tough but it easier than removing suncorite from the rest of the rifle to re-finish it.

Cheers

On that note, I once found a nice No4 for a guy, A few small scratches in the paint, so I loaned him a spray can of British black to touch up those SMALL areas. the IDIOT took a wire brush to the metal and STRIPPED the suncorite off ALL the metal and used the ENTIRE can of British black to paint the rifle. He NEVER returned the spray can and NEVER paid me for it!

Why remove milspec Suncorite to replace with commercial paint!?!?!?!

Some people's kids!

By the way, I have the product sheets from Henkel on Suncorite and guess what?

The "parkerizing" we always see under Suncorite isn't parkerizing after all.

Real Suncorite is applied to bare metal and has a phosphating catalyst built into the coating. As it dries, it automatically phosphates the metal beneath to aid in adherance.

You are not going to find SUncorite unless

Brian #### in the US has Suncorite.

And no he does not sell it.

I believe the last time he posted about it he bought it in maybe 40 gallon barrels.

You can however, strip your rifle and ship the receiver and barrel to him and pay him to paint it.

If you just want good paint go to a hardware store or automotive store and buy barbecue paint (black) it is the same formulation as header paint --that is what the paint company told me when I spoke with their engineers.

Of course VHT header paint will offer better solvent resistance because as I said you are not going to find suncorite.

I notice that you have not factored into your financial calculations any of the hazardous goods fees.

Also you may well find that to import it into Canada an import permit paperwork may well be required due to the cancer causing agents in Suncorite.

Actually, I now have a litre of suncorite for product testing. If it pans out, may bring in a good bit more and offer for sale through MSC. Will keep you informed :)
