Just in case you have time to do some scouting, straight east of Red Deer, near the Saskatchewan border there are pockets of genuine Prairie Dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus?), or as my wide-eyed friend Jim called them, "Giant Gophers."
I keep a tally on my phone. I’m only at 75 for the year so far, been way to busy of a spring to get out and really put a hurting on them. All just been opportunities that arose while doing other things.

I know it is easy for the likes of in the peanut gallery to spout off suggestions of a Season Tally , but it sure is fun.I keep a tally on my phone. On the Alberta outdoorsman forum they are keeping a running Talley that's up to 991 currently. I used to keep clicker to count as I went but it's gotten lost so I just keep track of rounds expended. Currently I am over 1000 rounds of 22lr expended shooting at the pesky varmints. As the grass grows up it will get harder and harder to maintain those numbers though.

wowza, that is a lot of targets. If you ever need some help pulling triggers, let me knowJust back from S Alberta, shot 3 morning but too much wind in PM. We shot a couple thousands, little ones out. Our main field we usually shoot has fewer than years past. We have shoot many many thousands from there. Good time but tired bu afternoon.
Did you find that it was a slow start this year? I was down to Vegreville and South of Camrose a few weekends ago and could barely find a gopher. On the Alberta outdoorsman forum they are keeping a running Talley that's up to 991 currently. It’s been a slow start, a slow everything, even the young ones come out has been slow. I’m not complaining at all, but if it does go back to normal here short it’s will suck because now everything is to green and tall to see them as well as we do in the early part of the springDid you find that it was a slow start this year? I think it was a good start but after that big snowstorm things died down hard. Pretty sure there was a lot of gophers lost from that storm. Before I could happily sit in one spot and plink for a while and after i had to hunt around for each gopher.Did you find that it was a slow start this year? I have to travel 8 hours to get down shooting gophers. I am willing to drive but not if numbers are good. I usually go east of Strathmore but took a chance on some new places where I was told it was good by landowners. Now the grass is going too high.I think it was a good start but after that big snowstorm things died down hard. Pretty sure there was a lot of gophers lost from that storm.
