I've always had a thing for the old "cowboy" type revolvers and I find myself looking more and more at antiques.The only handguns I've ever owned were sa revolvers,before the rules changed.I didn't bother with an RPAL because I have no interest in modern auto's or the like and honestly have no use for modern revolvers.
I have found a couple of sites that sell antique revolvers in Canada but wonder if their isn't more.I scan the EE forum here regularly but don't see much of what I'm after.
I just missed out on a Remington new model police in .38rf Circa 1865-1873.
Could anyone share any info on where to look for reasonably priced "cowboy" type antique revolvers?
I'm not after anything "special" from a collectors standpoint,just a descent example of yesterdays iron.

for those that don't know,ellwoodepps has a few antique status handguns listed,their prices are good,and they are great to deal with.

im not sure if you're looking for old desings or antiques but cimarron makes old desings (NEW), not sure if you're following me there?
Maybe you could just come up to your local dealer and have him order for you, uberti has a nice line too

but then if it's an antique you're looking for, ignore the above

I have about a dozen sites listed in my favorites, but they are USA based except for one of two. I haven't purchased from any of them (my antique Colt came from the EE) but I can post them if you are interested.
 
I am just getting into the old stuff myself and really one of the best places to look is here on the EE. However you have to be fast if something good and reasonably priced comes up because we have some real quick draw artists here.
What I did was ask someone I knew was into the old stuff and he gave me a tremendous amount of help and sold me my first piece ,a very cool DA top break S&W in .44 Russian.

Do your research and don't just stick to Colt SAA's. There were lots of other guns in the old west especially in Canada where we would have had more British guns like the Weblys.
Thanks to the interest in Cowboy action shooting finding leather and obscure rounds is a lot easier than it used to be.

Also because of the crappy economy it is a buyers market for the first time in a long while. There was a beautiful .41 Colt SAA on the exchange for a long time before it went and I would bet it would have been snapped up in minutes a year ago.

I don't mind cut barrels ,so long as it suits the gun and it is in otherwise good condition. A otherwise great gun with a cut barrel can be a fantastic deal for someone who wants something with a bit of history. I would stay away from parts guns though unless it is a really good deal from a reputable seller.

For a while I was worried that some drug dealer was going to buy a Colt SAA and ruin it for the rest of use but realistically I doubt now that will happen.
For one antiques are very expensive compared to a illegal handgun and bullets are hard to find. Also guns are a fashion accessory to these guys and while I may think a Webly is way cooler than a Glock the buttheads don't share my good taste. Mostly though it is much easier for them to find a hi point .380 than a antique. They have had problems with antiques used in crime in the UK but they are INSANE about firearms and don't have the worlds longest unprotected border with the US.
 
I'm looking for a piece of history.I have long guns and saddles that are 100+yrs old.The rocking chair my Grandfather brought from Ireland sits by the fireplace in my saddle shop...if ya get me.
Would appreciate any links to places I can look,even just to get a better feel of the market.

Keep checking the EE ,just in the last month i have seen a great .41 Colt SAA ,
2 Colt Thunderers .one a .41 like Billy the Kids and the other a Shopkeepers model ,a great S&W SA top break with a 6 inch barrel in .44 Russian that I really wanted to match my 4 inch .44 Russian top break DA and a couple nice Webly's. One nice thing about the Colt SAA's is they made them for a long time and they were a very sturdy design. Myself I like the S&W top breaks like the Russian and the Schofield but you should find a specific niche and try to learn everything you can about them.
 
Colt SAAs are nice.
Your gona have to look at the Ammo you want to Shoot to.
Most Colt SAAs in Canada are 41 Long colt like the one Below in the Picture i sold recently.
I have Another Real beauty im thinking of Maby selling chambered in 45 Schofield.
BUT there VERY expensive.
A colt thunder is a good frist Gun and as Unsub mentioned theres been a few very nice ones sell very reasonable recently.
There not Tough like a Webley tho.
If you Dont reload you will or should learn to.
Theres some nice French guns to both the 1892s and the 1873s are Very well made.
People always seem to put down the French but if you have held and shot a 1892 lebel or 1873 converted to 455 or orignal 11 mil one you would see they made Quailty guns back then to!
Both are DA and to me a DA Double action is a great thing in a Handgun.
S&W DAs are very slick light weight and Accurate. :)
I could NEVER sell all my guns and keep one.
Id have to Keep one of each a S&W DA a Webley DA a Remington 1875 a SAA colt Oh forget it i need at least 9 Handguns :D

Have seen a few interesting pieces in the EE forum,I'll keep looking til I find what fits.Thunderers are definitely worthy,but I'm not being narrow minded about makers.Loading for an antique is another aspect I look forward to.dies for virtually any caliber can be built in the lathe.

x2 there great people to deal with.
They get some very Unique guns in to.
I bought my Custom Orignal Rogers and Spencer Revolver from them.
+ a few other very intresting guns.
Joe and Suzi are Ex to deal with.
They Mainly have antique Flint and Percussion Pistols tho, not cartridge handguns.
Very Nice Double Rifles to!
 
I am just getting into these guns myself and all the other gear that goes with them is a lot of fun as well. Of course you will need a decent knife like this original Price bowie.

I am going to pick up a bowler hat and a duster after I recover from Xmass.
I also have a bone handled GEC folder on the way with old style carbon steel blades.

I have a sheath being made for my Ross rifle bayonet/camp knife that will go on my gun belt with my S&W top break.

Reloading is fun stuff as well.

Unsub: ever see a folder in your travels that has a screw driver(s) custom ground for a specific revolver? I am sure they must have existed and if a period knife was altered to service a period revolver the utility and authenticity would have a high 'cool' factor.
Any suggestions for a common 2-3 blade folder that was made in the 1890s that could be had for reasonable money and not represent a historical affront by grinding it?

P.S before you spend money on a bowler and duster get a spare hand, main spring and hand spring to fold up in some oiled chamoise.


Don't forget anyone in the old days anyone with any sense who figured they might 'need a revolver' would have first packed a rifle! Your gonna need a single shot antique rifle! Luckilynthey are cheap like borsch and they make you less and less interested in expensive wheel guns!
Another nice thing about antique long guns is that you truly can shoot them anywhere (that it is legal) and not have the potential stress of a well meaning citizen or LEO ruining your day.

Being able to hunt with an antique rifle is also a nice touch. our regs dictating greater then an 8.3 mm bore means pretty much any antique rifle cartridge makes an excellent big game cartridge.

hi folks, i kinda tripped over your thread looking for something to read and i got a couple of dumb questions if you dont mind.

first, and i know this is a broad-ranging question with antiques are they safe to fire
second, if you could fire it can you still find info and tools to load your owne

several time i have thought about buying several different types of antique weapons, but if you cant shoot them to me its kinda like owning a car you cant drive. if you know what i mean.


( old winchester,flint lock pistol, and i think it was called a Lèmatt .44 over a 20 g shot shell in a pistol!!!)
