Anybody know of a place here in Canada or a place in the states that will sell and ship a 14mm LH die AND 7.62x39 pilot to me ? the dies seem to be easy to source, but the pilots on the other hand.... :bangHead:

threading the muzzle to my type 81.

Most guys would just spend less than that on getting the barrel threaded by a competent 'smith.

Now, this may seem strange to you, but other than in bubba's box o' tricks, I have never seen a die with a pilot in any machine shop setting. YMMV.

How were you planning on getting the muzzle down to the right diameter? Files? Angle Grinder? Or just mash the stuff out of the way with the die?

Might as well just tack weld the flash hider on the end of the barrel.

A file to be honest lol.... BUT I just found out Hical.ca has the ability to turn the muzzle OD down to size by use of piloted angular cutter. SO ill just submit the gun to them. I first tried Bits and pieces in Vancouver, but they replied back with a rather arrogant NO via email. Ive come to know many other gunsmiths of course do their threading on a lathe, which often drives the cost up in the hundreds if the barrel is still attached to the receiver.

You can try Manson Reamers. They make custom cutters. I bought one of their .30 cal crowning tools and love it. 4 crowns and the tool has paid for itself.

I'm a bit confused about the 14mm LH thread since every .30 cal brake or flash hider I've ever seen advertised uses a 5/8-24 RH thread. What kind of oddball thing are you trying to put on?

Generally, most soviet rifles and rifles alike in 7.62x39 are threaded for 14x1mm LH. Most AK's will have a 14mm LH thread. The Czechs however decided to be different lol they threaded their 7.62x39mm muzzles for 14x1mm RH.

I want to put a AK 74 brake on my Type 81......... why ?? cus thats just how I fancy it ;)

Ah, I get it now. Brownell's used to sell the exact pilot and die but have discontinued it. But these guys have them although you can get the die for less on Amazoom.ca https://www.carolinashooterssupply.com /SAIGA_AK47_7_62_THREADING_DIES_AND_ALIGNMENT_TOOL_p/die-14x1.htm

edit - they have kits too http://www.carolinashooterssupply.com/Gun_Barrel_Threading_Tools_s/1891.htm

got mine from MaCDougal tool supply in Calgary. he had it in stock. best lil tool shop in western Canada. bob knows his #### to. want the number pm me and ill give it out

I did not use a pilot. I wanted the die to thread SKS bbl to take an AK brake. I built a tool on the lathe to hold the die in one end with a hole in it to go over the bbl. tape the bbl to protect it from scratches, drop the tool over the bbl and thread it. worked great. have maybe done 10 so far.

I'm not sure how you use a pilot with a die? ok I take that back, I see now/ my system needs no pilot

I didn't understand the die pilot idea at first either, now I'm going to make some 😉. But the thing that really caught my eye was the use of annular cutters to reduce the barrel OD. Measuring the ones I've got it looks like 3/16" is the usual cutting width. So a standard 7/8" and 1" cutter should make a nominal 1/2" or 5/8" blank. For the pilot I'm thinking a jam fit aluminum or brass piece that then uses the usual centre pin hole in the cutter as the bearing surface.

Yah I only have to turn my type 81 barrel because it measures 14.44mm OD, meanwhile an SKS measures like 14.04mm. Pilots only handy for using the die stock free hand. I could get it done with just a die, and a machinist square, but thought if one could source out a place in Canada to purchase a pilot from, why bother with the square.

this is what I built out of a scrap chunk of aluminum. hole is big enough that I can masking tape the bbl and oil it and no scratches then works slick

yes he can. I'm amazed that more people haven't found him. bob really knows his #### and carrys only good stuff. I get all my gun taps there. carrys dam neer everything. he had the BA taps for the enfield screws even
