I just bought my first gun cabinet and was wondering where to store it. I was thinking of putting it in the furnace room but it can get warm or I was thinking of putting it in my storage room. Any pro's or con's?

The gun cabinet must always be close to where you sleep. I mean, near your master bedroom. Walk-in closet attached to your bedroom could be ideal. You will feel safe close to your guns and viceversa

little piece of advice guys...

people who break into houses beeeeeeeeline for the master bedroom. The majority of entries to houses target the master bedroom, master closet and master bath. IF you are gonna put stuff in your bedroom be sneaky about it, be creative. don't just drop that bad boy safe there cause I have seen guys rip s**t out of walls, tear up floors, the list could go on.....

One fundemental truth....criminals are largely stupid and lack imagination. Basements rarely get searched, furnace rooms are even rarer.

Just be sneaky......dont leave your guns out for someone with a crowbar and a strong back to walk away with them.

where to put the safe

I agree with fozy . put the safe in to basement in a corner . people who break into homes are in and out fairly fast unless they feel comfortable . if it is one of those cheap tin can safes from canadian tire pile crap infront of it to hide it. and if it is a good one don;t leave any tools in sight where they can see them . you always want to make it as hard as possible for someone to steal from you . your choice .

I've got one of those cheap tin can safes from canadian tire and it's bolted to the wall inside my closet. It's pretty out of site... even though it is a cheap tin can safe from canadian tire I don't see anyone getting into it super easy. I'm sure they can but still they're pretty solid. It's more of a deterant than anything... for a thief if there's a will there's a way.

Basement always

Thieves don't like to go into basements for fear of being cornered by the owner if they catch em down there. Any where in the basement out a site in a locker is good enough for me. I would not hide them in a closet, too obviious. Before the law changed and we didn't have to lock em up by law I did get broke into. It happen 2 weeks after I came back from hunting. I left my rifle on the stairs after coming home for quit a while , lucky for me I hid it before the break in happened under the bed. They never found it, thank god I still have my 250-3000 99EG in excellent condtion. They did tear throught the bedrooms and closets, but they never looked under my bed. They took a lot of electronics and crap, but not my 99, and I still have it today shot 4 running deer with it in 2006 hence the reason for my avitar logo.

I like the idea of hiding cabinets. Behind false walls in bedroom closets, pistol cases in false walls in bedside tables etc etc... You can't steal what you can't find.

Any place that is not damp is ok for gun storage. If your furnace room is always warm and out of the way, Iwould say it is an ideal location for storage.

basement if good for theft deterrent, but moisture may be a problem. If you gonna go that route, find some decent desiccant with color indicator. Don't forget to tape any holes shut in your cabinet to keep it fairly air tight.

I have a Stackon cabinet in a hallway linen closet. What thief looks in a linen closet? Plus it keeps my wife happy, no ugly green box messing up the decor. It just fits, and it's bolted to the floor and walls with lag bolts. No one will get the cabinet out, but they may break into it. However, when you add up the odds, it's pretty damned unlikely.

Paint the wall it's bolted to in cammo including the safe. I have trouble finding mine due to the excellent cover. :D Joking aside having more than one safe on different floors makes it more difficult for all your guns to get stolen. Also don't forget a great home alarm system and at least one dog.
