Where to Re-barrel some Enfields - Alberta

I've only seen a photo of the setup used originally. The barrel was vertical, clamped on the Knoxform. The receiver, held in the receiver wrench, was screwed onto it.
No way for anything to slip.
It is my understanding that the No. 4 barrel was intended to screw in hand tight to 14 degrees off TDC, then it would be set in place with 120 ft. lb. of torque. That's more than most any rebarrelling done by a gunsmith.
One scrapper that I broke down let go with me hanging on a 3 foot cheaper. That's over 600 ft. lb. of torque.

Archimedes Quote: Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.

Do you guys make your own barrel vice and action wrenches or purchase them from a supplier? I Am gradually getting gunsmith tools and I am interested in taking that step to rebarreling.

Well the first set of quotes from one supplier came in.

For all intents and purposes to just re-barrel (not including iron sights etc) we are talking $1300-1600.

Quotes from others may change this.

Its very sad though as at that cost it would be simpler to purchase a brand new manufactured rifle. If I remember correctly the AIA No4 Mk4s were selling for less than this.

You may as well just buy Stuart's rebuilds for less money. His work is excellent and the wood looks gorgeous when he's finished with them. I just took out a No.4 and No.1 he built to the range and they were shooting ragged holes at 50 metres. I was just using light plinking loads of .310" 123 grain SKS bullets (I know, the bore diameter!). Groups will tighten up when I use 150-180 grain .311/.312" projectiles and do a proper ladder test. Stuart's guns sure get a lot of attention at the range.

Hey

Is there any options for an Enfield to be rebarreled to .762. My dream is a Jungle Carbine in 7.62

Sure. Custom barrel contoured to duplicate the No. 5 barrel. Magazine system to suit. $$$$$.
The No. 4 action is pushing its limits with 7.62x51. The No. 5 has had steel removed from the receiver to lighten it.
Don't know that this conversion would be a good idea.

+1 on Stuart Hardcastle in Saskatchewan, leeenfieldrestorations DOT com

I got a beautiful restored 1943 Long Branch No. 4 Mk. 1* from him recently, and love it. He's also a most interesting fellow to chat with - full of great stories. I highly recommend him.

This thread got me thinking...

With re-barreling an Enfield (I assume using an old good condition service barrel) how does one ensure that the front sight of the new barrel is actually lined up correctly with the receiver once it has been installed?

By using parallel bars on the top of the front sight base and the receiver ring flat.

Hmm well maybe just a standard length lee. Rebarrled to .308 maybe cut down. For less then 2k? Is that feasible?

Check these out...

7.62 built on a No.4 action.
