i've been wanting to do a rifle build but have been havin troubles finding an action to get started with.

so i was just wondering if there is a place a guy could find an action to get started with or would i be best to just buy a complete rilfe and start from there. i've been lookin for something along the lines of a win m70, parker hale or a rem 700

what calibre. post on the equipment exchange board, buy a used gun and use that action. depending on what you are prepared to spend, often a used gun will sell for less than the price of the action would on its own.

then get it trued, lapped custom barrel and stock and away you go.

"...buy a complete rifle..." Most shooters do just that. Some will buy a brand new rifle just for the action. Used will do. Ideally, that used rifle will have a poor barrel chambered in a cartridge that is in the same family as the one you want, including the action length. Gun shows are usually good places to find somewhat rough used rifles. Don't worry about buying used though. You really have to work at damaging a modern hunting rifle.
Depending on where you are, the local newspaper can be too. After deer season is usually best for the newspaper.
Actions by themselves, of any make, are difficult to come by and cost nearly what a whole used rifle will cost.

Look for a P14 or M1917 with a shot out barrel. Send it to Beven King with instructions to alter it to the cartridge of your choice up to the large old british cartridges!

After he doses the barrel change and fix's the feeding, you could the stockwork your self if you like!

When I was doing my build I bought a used rifle here on the EE. Then bought all the parts off of variuous suppliers before dropping it at the smiths to have it rebarrelled, bedded, and reblued. This way I could spread out the cost for all the parts and providing the smith with everything he required ment I only had to wait about 3 weeks for him to put it together for me.
