where to start

i've been spending a fortune in ammo for my 280 rem and now that a 300 WSM is on its way i really want to get into reloading. i have a friend who just started reloading last year so he has been making a few round for me when he's around but he is still a rookie at it :D
so i'm looking for some advice on which equipment i should be looking at. quality gear at a reasonable price is what i'm looking for. is there a 'kit' i could start with or should i buy all individual components. also if a cirtain piece (ie. scale) should be quality please let me know.

RCBS and Lee both sell kits, as does Hornady.
In fact, I think most of the companies do.
You can get them at Wholesale sports, but I prefer to deal with Hhigginson's in Ontario, as I buy my powder ( IMR, Hodgdon, and Vitivouri) as well as Horandy bullets there.

The Lee classic cast press would be a good one to look at .

I would recommend the RCBS Rockchucker kit. It's a little more expensive than the Lee equipment, but it's top quality and their customer service is tough to beat should you ever need it. The RCBS kit comes with pretty much everything you need to get started except for the dies and shell holders.

A good place to start would be to pick up a good reloading manual (you'll want to have at least two once you get started). The Lyman one seems to be very popular.
 
Have a look at the RCBS Beginner's Kit. Their warrantee is better than Lee's. About $500 with taxes. Buying the equipment separately will cost you more. Buying used is an option too. RCBS will fix any problems you may have, no questions asked, even if you buy used or you damaged the part.

So Will Lee Precision



Buy the Lee Anniversary Kit for about 125 bucks. It literally has everything you need. Mine is going on 10 years now with absolutley NO UPGRADES DONE. I had one broken part which Lee sent me no questions asked no need to return the broken part (p.s Coulda been my fault and I told them that)

CAn't say enough good about them.

The Lee kit will get you started and for the money you cannot go wrong.

RCBS makes a better product, as does Hornady.

I have a Rockchucker, as mentioned above, but think it is kinda big for ordinary tasks. I only use mine for 50 cal.

Some extras you need:

Dies

Shell holders to match your calibers

Loading blocks (50 round palstic blocks to hold cases)

Loading manual (s) I like the Speer and Hornady

case lube.
 
Just a litle added advice; remember that the best bonus to handloading is turning out quality ammo! You will probably find that the top end, hottest loads are not necessarily those that give the best accuracy and consistency.

Take your time and craft your ammo rather than trying to beat the commercial production lines for speed!
 
the 2 main reasons that i want to get in to this is
1: price... i like to shoot and i'm spending a fortune on ammo
2: accuracy... i think a couple of my guns will do better with some tweeking with handloads.
