Thanks, what damages scopes the most?
I would say gravity. and smashing out the glass. I'm sure bears and fire tornadoes are pretty hard on them too.
Try this: hold a your rifle offhand with a scope @ 3x for as long as you can, pointed at a target at 100 yards- pretty steady?
what about at @10x?
@20x ?
find the magnification that the reticle is steady enough for you.
also remember with many scopes your eye relief will shrink as you crank up the magnification.
my falcon menace eye relief goes from 3.5 @ 4x down to about 2.5 @ 14x.
the most magnification I ever use in the field is 10x. the 14x is for bench/ rested.
As soon as I hear someone who is inexperienced with scopes and magnification say they want a 20X scope, I just casually mention "ever wondered what your heart beat looks like magnified 20x?"
Every move, bump, shake or tremor will show up, 20x more.
I don't doubt that some fellows use 20x with good results, (like gunpro) I just find that some budget scopes start offering higher powers to make up for sh*tty everything else. if you have a $500 3-9x40 Leupold in your hand with a 6-24x50 ncstar in the other for $199.99, you are going to be tempted by the more bang for your $ offer of the NCstar.
A quality 3-9 will more than make up for its lack of 24x power.
