Where to use lead shot?

I was picking up some steel shot to go goose hunting when the owner of the store tell's me
"as long as your 100yds from a body of water you can use lead shot"
My belief is if I'm hunting any migortory game bird's I have to use steel.
Lead for rabbit's and fuffed grouse.
We were hunting in a grain field.

He's wrong. Steel only for migratory, no matter where. Lead for anything else.

Steel only applies Canada wide, no matter the province.

In Manitoba when hunting migratory game birds, non-toxic shot is mandatory. You can use lead for upland game birds and wild turkey.

Doesn't matter, migratory birds are a federal jurisdiction.

Im pretty sure you can still use lead for woodcock... (A migratory bird).

Woodcock is the only exception to the rule that states non toxic shot only for migratory game birds, and possibly morning doves depending on your location.

Woodcocks, band-tailed pigeons, mourning doves and murres (turres) are all exceptions to the non-toxic shot regulation (see Sect 15.1 of the Migratory Birds Regulations). The exception for murres (turres) is an annual regulation.
