Put a red dot sight on my Browning 71. Where should I zero the sight? 100yd POA=POI or should I sight it 3" high at 100 yds, zero at 200 yds, -5" at 250 yds, -13" at 300 yds, given a muzzle velocity of 2500 fps, 200gr Hornady bullet. And what type target works best for zeroing small red dot sights?
By the way it really helps old eyes, put 3 rounds in to a nice 1" cluster at 100 yds with the new sight.
 
A simple scheme is to zero it for the maximum distance you want to shoot at, and remember how high it shoots at the halfway point. You can then estimate the offset for any shorter distance to within an inch.

That sounds like an adequate plan to me, but you are the one that knows your hunting conditions, so adapt and adjust as required.

I've shot coyotes at 300 plus, but never taken a shot at a deer over 200 or so. The laser rangefinder sorted out a lot of that!

I have 71s with peep sights on them which I enjoy shooting. Unlike some folks , I have come to the conclusion one cannot be young forever.With old eyes using peep sight on overcast days, in rain, and poor light can be problematic. Red dot sight mount fits in the holes on the receiver for peep sight, no alteration of rifle needed. Sunny days I shoot my 71 with Redfield adjustable peep and King mirrored front sight. Cloudy days and when I'm going to be in dark timber, I think I'm going to like this red dot thing:cheers:
 
When you remove the screw on aperture from the bolt mount peep on the 86/71 Pedersoli, you end up with a proper ghost ring sight for older eyes. (Like mine) I'm gonna put a bunch of lead through my one to break the bugger in now that I've decided to keep it.

Yes, a red dot may look weird on a lever gun, but if ye got vision issues it's a good option.:)

As for zero... figure out the maximum range you plan to shoot and then work with a 2.5" or 3" kill zone radius to calculate the best zero yardage... the JBM ballisitc calculator (google) will help you figure that out.

Do you have a picture of this? What mount are you using?
 
I can only post pics when one of my kids come home for a visit and walks me through it. Google Turnbull FastFire II mount or go to Turnbull site ,it has nice photo of mount on Model 71.
 
To the original question... I'd zero at 100 yds. for the style of hunting I would do with that rifle. Quick, close, and instinctive shooting on moving game. If you have to stretch one further out there, just aim at the spine.
 
European hunters were putting Aimpoints on their rifles long before they became mainstream on "tactical" firearms. A red dot is no more or less blasphemous than a conventional scope.

The Turnbull mount doesn't look to be much more obtrusive than a receiver-mounted peep sight:

I would go for a 100 yard zero for a short range rifle without a magnified optic.
